@Mrs. Lion: okay I see. I used to have a great sleeper in the rock n play but she is getting uncomfortable in it. We have been trying to transition to the crib since last week and she will only stay put for one short stretch at the beginning of the night. im thinking moving the swing will help us consolidate all of her sleep into the same room - the nursery. And would hopefully be very temporary mostly just to get her used to sleeping in there.

Heck yes. When LO2 was that age, he wouldn't sleep in ANYTHING besides the swing for about 2 weeks. We kept him in it for all naps and overnight during that time. I didn't have any concerns about it.

@buttermilk: We decided not to based on our ped's recommendation. Not because of safety (he said it was fine temporarily while things were rough), but because she typically slept fine in her crib and he didn't want us to start a bad habit.

Turns out we have another sensitive sleeper...At 8 months she sleeps great, 11-12 hours, when all is well...but throw in sickness, teething, or motor milestones and she is up 2-3 times per night. Frustrating, but normal (sadly) :meh:

@edelweiss: I think we are just going to wait it out...she's actually sleeping terribly right now so we have some developmental stuff going on i think. I'm a little concerned about the weaning if we start now that we will make things worse. Just wanted to add my ped's thoughts on case someone finds this thread later. :)

i would worry about the increased chance of flat head (since it's overnight instead of just naps) and then weaning from the swing. but you know, you gotta do what works for you and your family (although i don't know anything about the SIDS risk, sounds like you are looking into that).

Not worth the risk for me personally. I'm also not a fan of the Rock n play for overnight sleep either. Their sleep is constantly changing, theres no guarantee it will work in the long term anyways. But, to me, if she's waking up that means she still needs something - whether it be food or comfort.

I skimmed through your responses so I apologize if you've already answered this. Would the swing be in your bedroom? If yes, then maybe. If not, then I wouldn't feel comfortable with that. We used to put LO in the swing after her 4am wakeup but DH would sit out in the living room with her while she slept. I was not comfortable leaving her in the swing overnight. And FWIW I wasn't comfortable using a RNP for overnight sleep either.

I did it with DS out of desperation :s but take it with a grain of salt because I let him sleep in the car seat a few times too! He was such a terrible sleeper I tried everything ... But I did worry about SIDS and would occasionally freak myself out.
fwiw, he had no trouble moving to the crib later on ... And he did eventually sleep through the night after 1 year!

@mrsrugbee: it's not profoundly dangerous. Harvey karp , the happiest baby on the block, pediatrician uses it as a tool for parents to help with sleep, and advises on the risks and how to help minimize those risks. Why take any risk? Well even baby sleeping in their own room carries a significant risk. Room sharing is one of the biggest factors that would help decrease SIDS but you don't see the same language used on parents who give their baby a nursery as profoundly endangering their baby.

No. At 4 mo I wouldn't have trusted DD alone in a swing, period. Baby girl was super wiggly and would for sure have found a way to roll herself into a bad position. It sounds profoundly dangerous IMO.

We used the swing at night the first few months. We always started out in the crib but if LO had a hard time going back down, to the swing! We moved to crib alone at 4 months when he learned to roll over because he could soothe himself back to sleep (strong startle reflex ). No issues.

@Mrs. Lion: I think with some items the concern was a large part straps. Parents not buckeling them or adjusting them properly and kids getting tangled. Or even shifting during the night in a weird position. A car seat has a steeper incline too so that's not supposed to be great for long periods.

I used a swing with my oldest. She spit up a lot and the scoop of the swing was just enough to help her keep food down. It was a hard transition to a crib though when she outgrew it, she never thought cribs were very nice

@Mrs. Lion: I'm confused too, honestly! I think the swing and car seat might be at slightly more or an incline?

Also, by 4 months your LO probably has some neck control and those things are probably less of a concern than they were when she was teeny tiny.

We had C in the rnp for the first few months. I was more worried about it making her head flat than the airway. Maybe I chose the wrong thing to worry about but both were fine.

I am really curious after doing some reading what the difference is between using a swing and a rock n play regarding safety. I hear about SO many people swearing by a rnp....but if the safety concern is the incline preventing sufficient oxygen, what's the difference? I am so confused.
