@Mrsbells: Check out this link:

http://kellymom.com/health/baby-health/tooth-decay/

The idea that breastfeeding at night or any time is linked to tooth decay is totally not supported by research. Don't worry about that part of it!

That being said, good luck with night weaning. That was one of the finest days of my life, and I hope you get there really soon.

i'm thinking about this and my LO is 5 months. Seems so cruel to not give her anything when she wakes in the night, but I know she can do it because she was STTN for about 6 weeks when she was younger. So hard...

@Mrsbells: I though the issue with milk and teeth is when it's in a bottle and a baby takes the bottle to sleep--the milk is then sitting in the baby's mouth/on the teeth and causing decay? In breastfeeding, it seems like it wouldn't be possible to just have milk sitting in the baby's mouth, as she would need to be actively sucking to get it? But maybe that's wrong!

No advice on the night weaning thing, we're no wehere close yet.

@runsyellowlites: Thanks for that link I will check it out since i always though breastmilk does affect teeth

He actually night weaned when he STTN at 12 weeks. We still nurse to sleep, but no overnight nursing sessions. (He's 5 months now). When we do have occasional night time wakeups, we paci or using a lovey to get him back down to sleep.

Right now we still nurse to sleep & through the night, I don't see that changing anytime soon... I figure it will probably be the last thing we cut but who knows what P has planned. From all that I've found breastmilk to teeth is much like water & since nursing requires a different sucking "mechanic" it's not like a bottle would be on teeth.

Here's some interesting info on breastmilk & tooth decay:

I cut out night feeding completely at 11 months. I night weaned at 8 months but she still needed a feed around 6am before sleeping for another hour. I think at 12 months, you can cut out the night feed. Just be prepared for some tears!

LO currently nurses to sleep so i'm not sure how i'm going to change that.

DS1 was 2 years old. We coslept and when he'd want to nurse I'd tell him not now and I'd try to comfort him because he's get upset. It was hard for a few nights because he was pretty mad about it, but luckily it only took a few nights before it was all over.

DS1 is 15 months and I'd like to night wean in the next few months.

We night weaned at 6.5 months when we simultaneously sleep trained and swaddle weaned. DS hadn't been nursing for nutrition but for comfort (super short duration) for a few weeks so we went ahead and did it all. DH had to take care of all night wakings though so my milk didn't frustrate DS.

I think between 9 and 10 months. It was more of a habit for her than anything. I sent DH in to soothe her instead of going in myself. If things got crazy I would go in, but I only had to do that once or twice. Within a week she was over it.

at what age did you wean from breastfeeding especially bed time and night wakings?
My daughter is 12 months and one week old and I am trying to wean her off breastmilk, it isnt really too hard during the day but she really wants to nurse to sleep and she wants to nurse when she wakes up at night. Her pediatrician says this is really bad for her teeth and I should just offer her water but thats easier said than done. How were you able to successfully wean at night and at what age?
