The APNO was difficult to get and didn't end up helping with my thrush despite the fact that my case was so mild. I would consider taking a probiotic if you think there is any way that this is a mild case of thrush. There are women's health formulations that you can find at health food stores. That might be an easy OTC thing to try...

@meadow: Yeah, you do need a prescription. Sorry your OB isn't being very helpful! :(

@meadow: could he have changed his latch, maybe due to teething? I know sometimes one bad latch nursing session can leave me sore for several days, so possibly this is like an exaggerated version of that? Have you tried something like neosporin or aquaphor? I would wipe it off before nursing. Good luck figuring it out.

@Adira: Thanks...I don't have any APNO - I've read about it here and on other sites ---- you need a prescription for it right? I messaged my OB through the website portal 2 weeks ago and she didn't seem very helpful :(

@Truth Bombs: Olive Oil - interesting - hadn't thought of that! Yeah - I don't have shards of glass.....(omg)

@agold: I KNOW right! When I look online everything is about these types of problems early on -- especially latch issues....not with 15 month olds! Thanks :)

@nana87: I haven't - I never used one early on so I don't even own a shield!

@Shantuck: Thanks! It is helpful to know that the nursling could be unaffected.

I had thrush on my nipples and DD was entirely unaffected. I wasn't in pain. It started out looking like dry flaking skin but after a few days it looked my nipples looked bright pink. I had thought it would be painful to nurse if it was thrush and that the baby would for sure have it, too, but that was not my experience. Anyways, not sure what your situation might be but dry flaking skin is a sign of thrush (according to my lactation consultant).

My mother had a similar issue. She said and this one will not hurt to try, but applying a lil bit of aloe vera gel, will help wean the child and also to heal the flaking. It is caused by the saliva of the child. But this is not a proven method, no scientific evidence is related to this. However, aloe gel is good for the child, skin and weaning. So doesn't hurt to try. Look up some literature on this. Perhaps you may want to try it.

Have you tried a nipple shield? It might help protect the skin a bit where the crack is.

I don't know any advice, but I'm so sorry this is happening! You'd think that problems like those would be during the beginning of the nursing journey and not at the end. Good job, mama, for making it so long.

It's definitely possible for you to have thrush without your son showing signs. But honestly it doesn't sound like thrush. For me when I had thrush it literally felt like shards of glass we're coming through my nipples when I nursed. It wasn't localized to one spot like it sounds like your crack is. The most effective option for me when I had cracks was plain old olive oil! I would try that!

I don't know what could be causing it (maybe teeth in that area?), but do you have any APNO? I definitely had cases where lanolin wasn't working, but APNO was a miracle worker for me.

I am nearing the end of nursing and hoping to fully wean by the end of September. We are down to one nursing session at 6:30am (to be weaned off by next Tuesday) and one at bedtime. We have been on this schedule pretty much since the end of June. Since mid-July I've been battling (on and off) a cut/crack on my nipple. It is on the underside where my nipple joins my aerola I guess. When I nurse and it's cracked...OWWWWW it hurts so bad. I do have some flaking on the skin below it - but I've been using a fair amount of lanolin...so I don't know if that has anything to do with things.

My DS doesn't have any signs of thrush in his mouth. But everytime I google what is going on with me that is all I can find. Also - my cracks are not on the top of the nipple which is also what seems to be most common on google.

Anyone have this happen? I can't imagine that if it was thrush for 1+ months that it wouldn't a) have gotten worse on me and b) gotten to the white spots in mouth stage for DS..................right?

Oh Hive.....I am hoping for some advice! I was really hoping to end this BF journey on a pleasant note!

Thanks :)
