@futuremrsmck - yep, bath latch can cause nipple trauma which in turn would hurt even when he's not currently at the breast.
WOW 8 months old and 8 teeth?!? My 7.5 month old just got his first last week and his second today.

@Ginger333: Good lord I hope not! He has 8 already! His latch didn't feel any different but it's entirely possible that's what it was...could it be the latch if it was hurting all the time, not just when he was nursing?

In any case, it seems to have resolved itself for now, and I have an appointment to see my doc next week so I'll talk to her then.

That is weird - to have the symptoms go away like that ... I'd still go see the Dr. and ask for Newman's All Purpose Nipple Cream. It's great to just have on hand. I keep it in the fridge, it's nice and cooling on sore nipples when it's cold.

It does sound like you had thrush ... maybe it was a bad latch on that side though. Is baby teething?

It was the weirdest thing, the pain stopped over the span of about two days! I couldn't find Grapefruit Seed Extract (or Gentian Violet) in the store so I ordered it online and was just going to tough it out until it got here, and whoosh it started to fade! It's still a little bit more tender than the other one, but it's not lip-biting, toe-curling pain anymore. So weird.

Sounds like what I had; never diagnosed but pretty sure it was thrush. I took 250mg of Grapefruit seed extract 3 times a day and noticed that the pain was less after 2 doses and gone after about 2 days.

@FutureMrsMcK: This sounds really similar to when I had Thrush. Luckily the baby never got it. Hopefully you are feeling better.

Hmm that actually sounds similar to thrush (a lot of people describe the pain as shards of glass in your nipple)...there's not always white spots in LO's mouth/on your nipple, sometimes the only symptom is pain. Have you been on antibiotics for anything recently?

OK, so we've never had a problem breast-feeding. Perfect latch, my milk came in right away, no pain or cracking or bleeding or anything.

DS is 8 months old, and a week or two ago I started getting intense pain in one nipple. It feels like tons of needles stabbing into it...all the time, whether he's latched or not. When he's latched on that side my toes curl up in pain. No evidence of a plugged duct or milk blister or thrush or mastitis...so I'm at a loss.

DH thinks I should consider pumping instead of nursing so at least I won't tense up when he latches on to that side and he won't see my grimacing/holding back a cry.

Has anyone had anything similar? Any advice? Should I start pumping? Maybe just on that one side? I'm at a loss.
