I was never told to pump with the nipple shield, but at that time I had a huge oversupply so it wasn't an issue.

@Boopers: We had been doing that but syringe feeding and I am over it. LO seems to be getting more efficient so I think I am going to try pumping after every other feed for now.

We go back to the ped on Thursday so I am hoping he will be above birthweight so I can relax. I will be pumping once I go back to work so supply is important but sleep is too!

I never knew you were supposed to pump while using a nipple shield. I pumped for about a week because my lo had latch issues but when she finally started latching I stopped pumping and nurses exclusively. I always had an oversupply

My LC advised it at LO's my two week appointment. I had already been pumping when I felt I needed it due to engorgement, about once a day. I continued that while using the shield which was about another week.

My LC recommended pumping after nursing with the shield. The shield can make it harder for your baby to transfer as much milk which in turn can lower your supply. She recommended bottle feeding 1-2 oz of the pumped milk to ensure baby had a full feeding. It was so exhausting and time consuming to nurse, pump for 10-15 mins, then bottle feed. My LO nursed every 2 hours so it felt like that's all we did for a while!!

Some people on here have no issues with their LO transferring and gaining weight while using a shield and they say their supply isn't hindered.

If you used a nipple shield, did you pump after every feeding too? The Medea instructions encourage it and I have been doing it but it is getting old!

So LO is 8 days old and was born with a tongue tie. We had it clipped on day 4 and saw an LC on day 5. We were doing practice latch on and pumped milk until he was able to latch successfully on day 6, but only with the shield. I am hoping to wean from the shield sooner rather than later but am wondering about the meantime. Since I have been pumping every feeding for a week now (since we came home) I think my supply is good but I don't want to jeopardize it.

Advice?
