@travelgirl1: I don't know why not; it might just take longer because she is more set in her ways? But maybe not? Doesn't hurt to try;

@.twist.: I think I started at 5 months? I know for my LO before that he was frequently crying because of gas bubbles, so I didn't attempt anything until I was more confident that he was ready. I think sleep is developmental like everything else and different babies reach the ability to self soothe an fall asleep on their own at different ages. Two other things that happened around that same time that also helped were introducing a lovey and he slept on his tummy.

@scg00387: thanks for your explanation! When did you start the process? Do you think at 3 months L is too young to "get" it like you talked about?

@scg00387: Do you think this would still work for a baby A's age? At 11 months I feel we've left it too long but poor girl has a sore throat at the moment and sounds very croaky so I don't want to make her upset on a night but in the same breath, we need to get her off relying on nursing for all sleep. Makes me sad, I love our cuddly night time nursing sessions but she really has to start to learn how to sleep on her own.

@yellowbird: this was the same with us. I like the philosophy but the specific strategies weren't that useful for us. And I already knew a lot of the principles.

@sotofamilia: @maybebaby: My interpretation of the premise (I also read Baby Whisperer so who knows what came from where, and it was a while ago) is that you do what you've been doing, in a tapering off process. So if you've been rocking to sleep, you rock to 99% asleep, but them in the crib. If they cry, pick back up, rock, repeat. Repeat repeat repeat until they fall asleep on their own, in the crib.

I think at first I maybe took it a little too literally and picked him back up the instant he peeped. Once we got more in the thick of it, he will sometimes squawk at being put in his crib but if I walk out and close the door, walk down to the kitchen, and back - he is quiet and asleep. Even now, sometimes he'll do this.

With that being said, it was EXHAUSTING and it was so tempting to just rock him to sleep all the way after picking him up for the 5th time. But, I'm glad I didn't. After a few days, he stopped fighting the whole process and really seemed to "get" that we were working together and bedtime went from a screaming fight to a peaceful, albeit tiring, process.

After maybe 3 weeks, he was going in drowsy with eyes open (probably right before he was 6 months) and a week or so after that, going in wide awake. I then used the same process for naps.

I NEVER thought I'd be able to just set him down awake. Never. It felt so foreign and far away. But it was worth the work, I'm happy with how it went, and we've never experienced any classic regressions or had to "retrain" per se. I never have to hesitate to go in if he does wake (has been mostly STTN since 9 months, 10.5 months now) and feel like I'm "ruining" something by comforting him when his tooth is cutting or he dropped his blanky out.

@wonderstruck: thanks!

The baby whisperer didn't work for us. Granted, we didn't try extremely hard at it. I just couldn't stay up all night picking my kid up.

I'd be interested to know what different tips this other books has.

@.twist.: Oh shoot, you know what? I just realized that I had the two mixed up! So yep, just ignore my last comment about the author, everyone... The No Cry Sleep Solution was more helpful than the Baby Whisperer, it gave much more tips rather than just one method that it insisted was the right way. Neither worked for me ultimately, but we did get some good tips for calming and such from The No Cry Sleep Solution.

I wish it had worked for us! I just gradually got more and more annoyed with the author constantly saying that if it didn't work then that meant you weren't doing it right, or it hadn't been long enough, or you weren't being consistent, or whatever. We tried it for weeks, but unfortunately shushing/patting.pick up/put down...none of it worked for our LO - if anything it made him more and more frantic and refusing to give up. Maybe we'll have better luck using it with our next LO.

We used it but didnt have really good success. We did use the tips to come up with a solid bedtime routine though. My LO never responded well to drowsy but awake. If I layed her down drowsy she would scream immediately. So I had to pick her back up 100 times. I like the philosophy though

Has anyone had any success with using the tactics in this book? We are on night 1, and DS just slept his longest stretch in 7 weeks. Granted it was 3.5 hours, but that's a start! He went back down easily too. I'd love to know how it worked for someone else long term.
