We had a lot of weird changes at our daycare. What mattered to me was communication and forward progress. I don't think it's weird or out of line to ask them for an update on their progress. If this is a major issue for you, I think they should know. Maybe they don't feel super motivated to fill the spot, because they don't realize it's an issue.

We've gone through something similar with our current center. The director, who attracted us to the facility, left a few months after we started there. We got a new director who we really liked and gelled well with. She recently left with two weeks notice, but it wasn't given to the parents. I priced out other places and put our kids on a waitlist at another facility. We have a new director, not sure if she's interim or not. Despite a rocky start, she's been communicative with us. So, in a year, we've had three directors. My mom, a former educator, says this is common in childcare. So, as a parent, you have to make the best decision for your littles and your family.

As long as the teachers had their act together, I would stay. At the end of the day, it is the teachers that make the difference not the director.

None of those things would bother me but I would be a bit concerned that in four months they haven't been able to find a replacement - it would make me think that either they're not trying very hard or people don't want to work there for some reason.

I would address these things with her but they are not deal breakers for me. I guess I rather them take longer to find someone right for the job than to just fill it.

I can understand if you're used to recieving those things, how it feels to all of a sudden not get them for an extended period of time.

Who owns the center, any chance you could talk to that person?

As long as the important stuff is happening, I'd be fine with it (i.e. the teacher turnover isn't really bad, there is someone you can go to with concerns, etc.) For what it's worth, we have a sort of similar situation in DS's pre K and I'm very disappointed not to be getting daily updates, but as far as I can tell he's making a lot of progress... I just don't anyways find out about it right away :bummed:

I wouldn't be bothered. As it is, our director is based at another site and only pops in periodically. I've never even spoken to him (granted, there is a language barrier). My LO is happy, doing fine, and loves to go to daycare, so that's all that matters to me.

I don't think any of those things would bother me enough to consider switching. I think the most important things are for my kiddo to be happy and well cared for, to love their teachers and to be comfortable with their curriculum and food. If you don't feel that there's enough communication, what about catching up with the teacher every day?

We dont have one right now either. It's been longer than four months that they have been searching - I can tell you that these searches take WAY longer than you would think. I had to be on the other side of one for something else earlier this year!

@raspberries: I would address those things specifically with the interim director. Just say, 'I realize you are stretched thin, but it's very difficult for kids and parents alike to not have any notice of teacher turnover, and I feel like I'm getting much less communication from the school altogether". Maybe they'll speed up the search a little.

@avivoca: Yeah, I don't think it's bothering me enough to leave yet, but it's definitely bothering and I'm not sure if I'm just not giving them enough time. We don't have an app for updates, and we don't have a monthly calendar that notes anything special (that's part of what was in the newsletter that's gone missing.) The teachers who suddenly appear and disappear is admittedly bothering me a bit more.

The things you are describing as slipping through the cracks would not bother me. I hate theme days, I'm updated throughout the day about what they are doing (we have an app), so I don't need a newsletter, and we have a monthly calendar that notes anything special coming up (not birthdays, I don't feel like it's the school's job to inform me of other kids'birthdays). I also know that if it's a center that there may be lots of hoops to jump through to get a candidate hired and I would rather they take their time to find the right person instead of just hiring anybody.

How long would you feel comfortable not having a director at your daycare?

Long story short, the director left our daycare at the end of June, and they still haven't replaced her 4 months later. Currently, the preschool director is acting as the interim infant/toddler director - she's obviously stretched thin, but a lot of little things are slipping through the cracks (i.e. no newsletters with the focus for each week/student's birthdays, no communication about new/departing teachers or students, no fun theme days like pajama day, etc.) I've asked multiple times how the search is going, and they'll always have an optimistic answer ("we just interviewed a great candidate!") but nothing ever comes of it.
