I am not comfortable coming to a birthday party without bringing a gift, even if that was what was requested. And honestly, I just don't like any mention of gifts whatsoever on the invitation, I just don't think its the classy thing to do. At 4 years old your LO will probably really enjoy having a party and receiving presents from her friends, I don't think it's such a horrible things for a kid to be celebrated and get a few gifts along the way. You can always donate things that are already in the house to make way for new things.

For LO's 1st birthday we said no gifts please and said if folks wanted to bring something, they could bring a donation to the children's hospital, but worded it so that they weren't obligated.

We said no gifts at LO's last party and over half of the guests showed up with gifts. Some people are going to bring something no matter what.

I would ask for just books- that's what we did for my baby shower and we got so many great books for her library!

DS was very aware of gifts at birthday parties by his third birthday and after 3 of his friends had parties just before his I didn't want to request no gifts.
I've started giving a small toy and Target gift card to Js friends so that mom can help pick something that's fun, useful, maybe put it towards a bigger gift?

We've said "no gifts please" on the invite itself - some people still bring a gift regardless, but most people adhered to the request.

for my DD's birthday we request no gifts. Some people bring a gift, but we do not open them at the party.

Everyone I know loves to give gifts and at 4, I would think it would be super fun for a kid to get gifts and for their friends to start learning about giving and help pick out the gift for their friend. I think I would leave it to word of mouth and when parents ask what you lo wants, just say books and give some suggestions.

Up until now we have avoided the "friend" parties for LO for many reasons. She'll be four this summer and I'm feeling pressure to throw a party. One of the reasons for avoidance on my behalf is gifts. Our kiddo already has more than enough of everything and I don't want more gifts to fill our home. Have you hosted a party for your toddler/pre-schooler where you requested no gifts?

I'd be open to charitable donations or books only. We simply don't need more toys that will fill up our space.
