@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I've totally definitely had honey lots of times throughout my pregnancy too.... oops!

DD is 14 mo and we just gave her a teeny bit of honey before bed to soothe her throat.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I've had so many colds from the end of my pregnancy and these first six weeks, I've had a ton of honey! I hope it's not an issue for pregnancy or breastfeeding...

@mrs.shinerbock: I went Googling after reading this thread and found honey listed as a not so good food here http://www.healthline.com/health/food-safety-pregnancy#Caffeine7 Ugh!

Hopefully I haven't damaged my baby permanently, but just tonight at 29 weeks I finally stopped using honey in my tea.

I would use brown sugar like what @MrsSCB suggested. I used brown sugar instead of honey for asian dishes and prefer the taste too.

I believe honey should be avoided even in baked goods!

I would replace with brown sugar -- I've cooked similar beef stir fries, and they were all sweetened with brown sugar! The maple syrup would impart more of a different flavor than the sugar, I think.

Clostridium botulinum spores cannot be killed with cooking temps. So no honey at all before 1.

Honey is one of those few things that you need to really be a stickler on. And this is coming from someone who has bed shared since birth. The risk of botulism is real.

@regberadaisy: yes! I have pure maple syrup! Hmm maybe I will try that! It only calls for 1 tsp, so I really don't think it should change the flavor too much

I would avoid. They say even cooking may not get it to high enough temps to kill bacteria.

@MrsBrewer: I think you could use the same amount of sugar or agave. It's not baking where the texture would make a big difference and it's a small amount.

@MrsBrewer: yes, we use honey and maple syrup a lot now when cooking in lieu of granulated sugar. You could even use pure maple syrup if you have that instead of honey. It won't make or break the recipe. ;)

@regberadaisy: do you think I could use sugar and honey interchangeably? Because that sounds like a perfect solution!

*Technically* it's a no-go, normal cooking temps aren't high enough to kill the potential botulism spores that make it problematic. But I've heard that babies from 6-12 months are at much less of a risk than 0-6, and if it's just a tiny bit, I think you should just trust your judgement.

I wouldn't. It takes very high heat to kill the botulism spores. To me it wouldn't be worth the risk.

I think you need to avoid it. From what I could find out the cooking process doesn't kill the (small possibility of) botulism. I didn't even do honey nut Cheerios but that might have been excessive.

So I know you shouldn't give a baby under a year honey, what about if it's in a recipe? I'm making beef and broccoli stir fry, and in the sauce it calls for honey.....is that a no go for my 8 month old?
