I think of the Toyota Venza commercial where the guy or girl in their early 20s is commenting how boring/lame their parents are for going to be early or not having many facebook friends, when the parents are actually out of the house with real life friends riding horses or mountain biking. The kid in the commercial is making a microwave dinner or sitting inside at their computer on a beautiful day, while their parents are out living life.

It's really a great commercial!

I think I could give up the internet up to a certain extent. There are some things I need it for at work, and I don't think I'd want to give up some of the convenience things, like gps directions, finding phone numbers and addresses, etc... Having a son now, I feel like I need the speed and convenience. He really won't tolerate trolling the bookstore for a cookbook so I can find new recipes, or something similar.

But I also find myself wanting to unplug more from the online world. There really is not that much going on online that is really important in the grand scheme of things. I read some blogs and use facebook in the few minutes I take each evening to relax while DH looks after DS, or once he is in bed. But it really is amazing to realize how many things I have time for when I put down my phone, the computer and turn off the TV. Cooking, cleaning, running, more sex with my husband, extra cuddles and snuggles with my little one... I really do waste a ton of time online and I'm realizing it's not worth it anymore.

So while I'm not cutting myself off completely, I am definitely cutting back.

I don't think so because I use it for all parts of my life! Looking up business addresses and phone numbers, reviews, e-mail communication, etc. I could be unplugged for a few days. Maybe.

No, i'd lose my job! Haha but i'd much rather have TV than internet at home. Wait, scratch that. I love being able to Google things when I need to know.

No. I think I could stop using it for leisure time (Facebook, hellobee, news sites, etc). But I'm way too dependent on the Internet for things like getting directions and looking up phone numbers. Plus I communicate with a lot of people in my life via email.

Nope. I love the internet. Especially in the winter when it's too cold to go out. I'd give up TV first.

I will sometimes block myself from the sites that I spend a lot of time on. Or I will go to a coffee shop with a notepad, and sketch out an outline of something I want to write.

I've noticed that, like the article says, my ideas are bigger when I unplug for a while and think things through offline. I'm making a huge effort to stay offline for longer periods of time though, and to be more present - especially when I'm with the kids.

I would still need to get online now and then though, since a lot of what I do involves building software for the web!
