@Foodnerd81: In my house, I've painted with Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore's Natura, and Behr. Of the three, the Natura kind of sucked (and I think they may have discontinued it, since I can't find it anymore) and I have spots on that wall where the paint has chipped from something bumping it. The Behr took two coats of primer and two coats of paint to cover well and was pretty thin. The Sherwin-Williams paint has been the best by far. They are forever sending me coupons in my email for 30%-40% off paint, so I've never paid full price. When I painted my bathroom, I just ran a fan to help ventilate it and it was no problem whatsoever.

@Happygal: yeah I'm fine with spending more to make the job easier- it's a small room anyway so we won't need to buy a lot. And I'm not pregnant so at least I don't have to worry about that! But c sleeps in there so that's a lot of time of her breathing it in. We were renting when we moved in so couldn't paint, but have sice purchased from our landlord. Wish we had painted before the furniture and baby were in but oh well. Then again we didn't know she was a girl anyway!

@Foodnerd81: I was wondering about this recently b/c we're moving into a new rental that I want to paint. This article was helpful: http://www.remodelista.com/posts/remodeling-101-everything-you-need-to-know-about-vocs-in-paint

But I also read that there's no studies showing the paint is definitely harmful during pregnancy, but they won't say it ISN'T harmful.

I bought a more expensive paint last time and thought it was well worth it. Rolled on so smoothly and didn't splatter. I was amazed!

Take pictures and share! I find painting to be so satisfying.

@blackbird: oh good to know, thanks!

@StrawberryBee: thanks for this link!

Does anyone have experience getting assistance at Home Depot? Are they usually pretty knowledgable? That's our nearest home improvement store although I know they don't carry Benjamin Moore.

Follow up question- if you hire painters will they move and cover your furniture for you or do you usually still have to prep the room yourself? (I know they would tape and such)

I like the idea of yolo colorhouse, and had requested some paint chip samples. No experience with it though.

@blackbird: this explains why low voc seems so much more prevalent in stores now!

So....the vast majority of traditional household paints are now no to low VOC due to all the environmental regulations coming out. Stay away from your acrylics, solvent based paints, alkyds, and specialty formulations (for ceilings, baths, floors, etc). These aren't really the types of paints you'd put on your wall for a residential use, anyways :)

I've always used the Olympic and Valspar paints at Lowes because they offer a hefty military discount around the holidays...and that tends to be when we do all our big painting :)

I just used Benjamin Moore natura no voc paint, and wasn't a fan of it. It seemed to dry/get tacky very quickly, and then would start attaching to itself instead of the wall as I was rolling. Also felt very drippy. But this could have just been the weather that day. I remember having better luck with Sherwin Williams Harmony. Be prepared to spend $50+.

Depending on the saturation of the goldish yellow, you may want to prime beforehand?

Can't speak as to how long before she can occupy the room, as in both instances we were able to paint long before she stayed there. Good luck!

We used Benjamin Moore and had great results. I would go to a paint store and talk to the people there. They are really knowledgeable and can give you the best advice.

I think Behr is low-VOC. That's what we used when painting Xander's nursery when I was pregnant!

What do I need to know about selecting no or low VOC paints? I thought Young House Love have a brief run down on it but I can't find it on their site right now. We bought our condo and want to paint C's room soon, and since there isn't great circulation in there I want to make sure to do it as safely as possible. I also want it to be as quick and easy as possible!

What paint brands/types do you like? How long do we need to keep her out of the room after we paint? Any links to an overview of what to look for in a paint and list of good ones (good coverage, goes on easily, only needs one or two coat?)

Walls are currently a goldish yellow, we will be painting them a soft grayish lavendar- I finally get the purple room I always wanted!

So first what do I need to know to do this safely and easily?
