I agree about watching the video or looking at pics of LO to help with letdown.

You don't have any hardness? I had a huge block last week...the entire part above my boob was really firm (probably 2-3 inches across). It took me an entire day of painful massage to get it out, but when I did, I got like 2-3 ounces extra. It was amazing. (I also EP.)

I would try not to worry too much and just keep pumping! Let us know how it goes!

OH THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE!!! I posted about this : http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/pumping-problems-have-you-experienced-this

First of all I have no advice though because I went through this, tried everything and it didn't resolve regardless of what I did. However I have to say it will pass. Give it a few days.... it will eventually go back to normal. Just don't give up pumping - and hand express may yield more for the time being. It is very odd!

Here is my story - we traveled to Australia for 2.5 weeks when LO was 5 months old. We nursed the entire time we were there except when he had nursing strike issue and we pumped for one day while we were there. It was odd because when I pumped, very little would come out after 15 minutes but when I hand expressed, things'd come shooting out!

So the trip was over and we went home. I started pumping for work and only nursing morning, night and over night like I used to before the trip. Then my pump sessions and let down became inconsistent. THere was one very bad day I pumped 10+ times and every time it yields 0.5-1.5 oz for 15 minutes (when I normally gets 4 oz at least). All watery! And I was engorged! Then like you said, it stressed me out and it makes it even harder to pump. I even borrowed a friend's pump thinking mine could be broken, but it still didn't work.

I called the lactation consultant, the hospital... no one had any idea what this is. But then somehow, it resolved by itself and went back to consistent after a few weeks of inconsistency.

So now that you mentioned about traveling, I wonder if that could have played a part in this bizzare pumping + letdown issue?

@banana: I do have a Medela. I have replaced the membranes before, but didn't think to check them this time.

@bpaig: I should try some extra skin to skin time with E this weekend. DH is out of town, so we were just going to stay in anyways.

@jennylynn: I've just never had let down issues before, it's so weird. My next pumping session was much more typical... so hopefully this morning was just a fluke.

Do you have a Medela pump? A few years ago when I first started pumping, I noticed that i would very little milk out of my pump but I felt engorged. So I took apart the pump parts and noticed that the white rubber thingy (the membrane) had a hole in it right next to the little nub that you stick into the yellow piece. Try checking the white membrane thing (the nub part) and see if it has a tiny tear in it. Even now, I have to constantly check the membrane and replace them every few weeks because of the tiny holes! After I changed out the membrane, milk came out again!

Sometimes I have a hard time getting my milk to let down when I pump. It's not that I'm not making the milk, it's like I'm just not responding to my pump if that makes sense. One thing that I found to help the most with my letdown was watching a video of LO laughing and squealing on my phone when I can't be around her. It's worked like a charm so far!

My close friend just had this happen to her and she said that Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding said to go to bed for 24 hours with the baby skin-to-skin and drink tons of water. So she did and she's back in business. Maybe that would help? I'm pregnant with my first so I don't actually have any experience to share :(

I had a big drop last week so I've made sure to increase my water to unbelievable amounts and that seems to have helped put me back to where I was before the drop.

I'm trying to focus on drinking a lot more today. I'm sure stress is a factor, but not being able to pump anything is not helping my stress level.

My milk was short after the Thanksgiving holiday, so I doubled my water intake and my milk supply has gone back up. Have you tried drinking more water?

I'm freaking out! I've pumped three times today so far, once in the middle of the night, once while I got ready for work, and once at work and only gotten about 5 oz of milk total. That's much much lower than normal and I'm struggling to even get a short let down. E only ate once last night too, there should be plenty! After I tried (and failed) at pumping while getting ready for work I tried feeding E and he seemed to be getting plenty of milk out. We were traveling over Thanksgiving and I breastfed almost the entire time and hardly pumped. I went back to work yesterday and all of a sudden am getting almost nothing when i pump!

My freezer stash is tiny and I'm quickly using it all up to make his bottles for daycare. What the heck is going on?? E is 6 months old and I've been back at work since he was 2 months... this has never been an issue before.

Any similar stories? Any advice?
