I was given a 2 hour. I'm in WA with a pretty large health group. It was just a one test determination. Nice compromise :)

Since I failed my 1-hour last time (but passed the 3-hour), my OB told me at my first appt that I would go straight to the 3-hour one :( It wasn't horrible for me (I didn't even mind the drink!), but I was STARVING after the last blood draw. I'm for sure going to pack a mini-7-Eleven in my purse so I can scarf something down ASAP.

@autumnlove: Thanks! I hope it's all ok too as I have the world's worst sweet tooth and would be miserable with no tasty treats!

@littlek: Yes, thank goodness! I can get a 7:30 appt so I'm hoping that makes it a bit easier!

@Dandelion: Nope, no risk factors other than I'm in my 30s (healthy weight, no family history, average size baby at birth with my LO, and no GD during that pregnancy). The midwife just said that due to the increase of diabetes across the board, and the high rate of false positives from the one hour test, they have decided to give everyone the three hour test as a routine practice. I should find out if this is just my region or an Australia wide thing...

I have a one hour test next month. If I fail (which I bet I will), I will have to do a 3 hour one.

Do you have risk factors for GD, or is that just standard?

Maybe they just felt like they had too many false positives on the one hour?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: That's the part I'm most annoyed about - I have to fast for 12 hours as well. Boo. I'm the kind of person that must have food within ten minutes of waking in the morning or I don't function properly, so this will be super fun I'm quite sure.

It's interesting how much this varies place to place! Truly, I understand the need for accurate GD testing but I didn't think a 20% failure rate would be enough to warrant everyone doing the full diagnostic test! I would have thought those who are low risk could do the one hour whilst those who are moderate to high risk would go straight to the three hour. Then again, I'm not a medical professional so my opinion is not based on any scientific fact.

Ah well. It's one night/morning of my life. At least I have my mom in town that week to watch my LO during the test! :-)

I passed the 1 hour with my DD who's 18 months old. No idea if my OB will try to make me take a longer test this time, but I'm going to try and get out of it--I meet none of the risk factors, and I'm way too sick this time around to try and drink that crap when I can barely get water down. I crashed hard and was sick for a day and a half last time, and that time I went into the test feeling good. No thanks.

My first thought is, "Oh eff that!" The 3 hour test was one of the most miserable experiences in pregnancy.

I understand with high fail rates, and the g-diabetes is not something to mess around with, but I really felt like my doctor's office could have done a lot more to help educate me on the situation (some say fast, some don't, it really varies from office to office- I know my lunch is what made me fail my 1-hour test).

@Ree723: my doctor has all of her patients do the two hour right away, but said that the "trend" is to start having patients do the three hour right off the bat. I see a high risk doctor, though, so I know she's extra cautious on most things. I'm in Seattle.

What makes me grumpy is that I have talked to a lot of people who didn't have I fast before their test! I had to for 12 hours!

Interesting. When I did my one hour, the lab tech drawing my blood said "don't worry If you have to come back for the three hour, about 1 in 5 have to". Made me really glad when I passed the one hour, those aren't very good odds!

@Ree723: My OB said she doesn't bother with 1h because it more than often concludes false positives. It is so inaccurate that many times the patient has to come back for the addition screening of the 3-hour test. This is time consuming and costly, obviously.

I'm in Canada and we still have the one hour test. Since I was with a MW and had no risk factors it was very much optional for me. I ended up doing it but would never do it again, it just seemed like a really terrible way to test one's ability to process sugar. http://evidencebasedbirth.com/gestational-diabetes-and-the-glucola-test/

@Ree723: I failed the one hour and unfortunately had to take the three hour (I passed). I would definitely bring a lot of reading materials or something else to help pass the time. Also, ask them to alternate arms with each blood draw so your veins aren't as sore during and afterwards. I also agree with taking a snack. I didn't do this and I was literally shaking and sweating by the time I got home to eat.

@Penny Lane: The one hour test is just a screening test that determines who potentially has GD, whereas the three hour test is a diagnostic test that definitively determines whether or not a person has GD. I know the one hour test has a fairly significant rate of false positives, and that is the reason I was given today for having everyone just do the diagnostic test. It saves time and worry for those who fail the one hour test but then end up not having GD.

@illumina: Interesting! I wish we did that here as I am low risk for GD as well, but alas, I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for the advice all - I will make sure to have snacks with me!

I'm in Austria. I am very low risk but had to do a 2hr test. I had to be fasting when I arrived (since the night before). They wanted a urine sample right away, but I just couldn't do it. When I saw the lab tech she did a blood draw, measured my initial fasting glucose level with the finger prick tester and then had me drink two cups of the glucose drink. After one hour I went back in, she drew more blood and I gave a urine sample. After the second hour, I went back in and same thing, another blood draw and another urine sample. It honestly wasn't that bad, just really time consuming, and after three blood draws my arms started looking like I was a drug addict.

In the UK it varies depending on where you live. Where I am now you don't need to do any test unless you fit the criteria for being at risk of developing GD. Where I lived at the beginning of my pregnancy, everyone has to do the 1hr challenge. I marginally failed the 1hr so ended up having to take the 3hr. It went fine, I was most concerned with starving having not eaten overnight!!
