I have the ability to work from home but don't use it often because I.get.nothing.done! Haha. I'm definitely not as productive.

I, also, work between two offices and communication is hard. I rely on emails and phone calls. I do love face-to-face interaction more. I have seen a lot of miscommunications/ misunderstanding/disagreements because of the situation at work. I wish I could be at both offices but I can't.

I do like the flexibility that I could work from home if I had to.

Maybe there's been a lot of abuse. All it takes is one person or a group of people to ruin it all for everyone.

I have worked from home when I'm sick or when my DH had a bad attack and I needed to stay home. I usually work from home on days where I can't miss an important meeting but can't physically go in. I usually just call in. It's still a work day. I still spend a couple hours doing work and my phone is attached to my hip because I check it every hour. On those days, I would feel bad wasting a sick day when I'm actually still working.

@daniellemybelle: From what I read she ended telecommuting, not flex time.

Marissa Mayer knows what she's doing. I doubt she would be ending telecommuting if it was working out for Yahoo.

I feel like this really penalizes/pushes out anyone who relies on a flexible work schedule to care for children or parents, which makes sense when you look at the CEO's own choices.

I can see the reasoning for SOME face time, but 1 or 2 days at home is really such an issue? I would be ticked off if I were an employee who negotiated this in my initial offer and then had it taken away. I feel like it would lower my morale, which is the opposite of what you want to do when building culture.

...cementing yahoo as a sinking ship. saying that ALL employees need to be on-site at a digital company is an insane and incredibly antiquated way of thinking. the part from the press release where they basically said that new ideas happen at the water cooler...start updating your resumes now.

I used to work for a company where everyone worked remotely. No brick and mortar office. It was in the interactive industry. I agree with @mrbee, this type of work requires deep collaboration that is facilitated by working together onsite. It's not that it can't be done remotely, but co-locating is more efficient.

Also, I don't get working from home bc your kid is sick. How can you get anything done when you have a sick child? The employee should just take the day off.

I tend to agree that employees should be responsible to a location and be able to report there in person.

However I do hope more companies do work from home days or flex time days to help promote a better work/life balance.

Maybe she is attributing it to the reason that Yahoo has been going downhill? As someone who is hoping to be able to telecommute when I have to return to work one day, it's definitely a disappointing thing to hear.

I said this before when all the talk came out about her maternity leave- she is a workaholic and these people do not know the meaning of "work/life balance". This policy seems pretty consistent with someone that can't take 2 weeks off to be with their newborn. I wouldn't want to work for a company that's headed by someone like that and I don't think a lot of other parents would either. Company productivity is not going to suffer if someone works from home to take care of a sick kid- that's just absurd thinking in 2013.

I work for a telecom company and they are making a huge move towards "mobile workers". I think even though you're working from home, you should still be available during core hours. There are so many advances in technology that you should still be able to work even if you're not all in the same office.

I think it's a shame that she is going this route. I will admit that there are a lot of people who abuse telework, but these people should be handled separately.

Telecommuting isn't beneficial to every business-as much as I love it, it does make some aspects of work more difficult and slower. Yahoo's been going downhill; perhaps virtual work was not helping that case :P

Building software often requires deep collaboration... I see her point on the value of in-person interactions. Google has a very similar policy, and that's where she came from.

Interesting...

I would have thought that she would be more in favor of flexible, family-friendly work environments. I personally disagree that communication and collaboration = being present in the office. There are so many advances in technology that it's simply not necessary to be at the office to perform many jobs.
