My Mom tells me she doesn't remember getting stretch marks from pregnancy. At 35 weeks, I'm still in the clear. We'll see, though. I also agree that while it feels good to use it, creams and lotions won't stop them from appearing if they're going to. :)

@MsLipGloss: LOL, Truth be told, I used tummy butter too just in case the experts were wrong. My sister had stretch marks and I ended up not getting them (even though I gained 40 lbs) so maybe the wishful thinking helped :)

My mom had horrible stretch marks from her first pregnancy, and I got quite a few in puberty, so I looked into this. The only thing I've heard actually helps any is drinking tons of water, so I drank at least 64+oz every day of my pregnancy. During the pregnancy, I got stretchmarks on my hips starting around 31 weeks, but they're pretty minor (and 80% of them are on one side---weird). I still used cocoa butter (hey, can't hurt), but really, I'm pretty sure it was increasing my water intake that helped.

I have some on my hips, but have always had them there. None on my belly yet, but I'm 34.5 weeks so there is still plenty of time for them to arrive! I know they will eventually fade so I'm not worried.

@Mrsbells: I agree with you, I feel like using lotion to prevent stretch marks is kind of futile. The skin stretches because of how fast the woman's body/baby grows, and how stretchy the actual composition of the skin is.

I think it's a lot more effective to stay hydrated and follow a healthy diet that promotes the skin's flexibility...lots of vitamins, Omega 3s/fatty acids, healthy oils, and protein.

@Red: Yep. I still slather lotion on (for the itchiness) and for whatever help it may provide, just so that I can comfort myself by knowing that I did everything to prevent/lessen them, and that I just didn't resign myself to getting them. :D

Everything I've read says that whether or not you get stretch marks is more genetic than anything else. The lotion really only helps with itchiness.

@MrsDaredevil: I have a few stretch marks from puberty (on my hips), and they definitely faded with time. As a matter of fact, before I got pregnant (and pointed them out to DH), he told me he had never noticed them before. I remember when I first saw them I was shocked (okay, horrified!) and thought they would be red/pink forever, but they weren't. And to be honest, about 95% of the time, even while wearing a bikini, I never give them a second thought.

i have some marks on my hips, but i can't tell if it's because my underwear's getting tight or if i really have stretchmarks. i've been oiling it every day too! it does say to do it twice a day and i only do it once after my shower. =T

I knew I was doomed from the get go too. I got them during my growth spurt, and when I gained weight, so I had no delusions that I would live without them during pregnancy.

Most pregnancy related stretch marks that I've seen are on the lower belly (under the bump). It is good to keep your belly moisturized but I dont think that prevents stretch marks. I think its more genetic than anything. Drinking lots of water can help though

My mom didn't get stretch marks and by my 35th week I thought I was in the clear. And then of course they started invading my whole body. Tush, tummy, boobs, everywhere :( No amount of lotion could stop them. At least I have a cute baby to show for it.

I just noticed some tiny angry red stretch marks very low on the bottom portion of my belly. I've been really focused on lubing up the top and middle part of my belly and not really the underside.

Word to the wise, lube your lower belly or see the wrath of stretch marks, and I was so proud too that I didn't have any so far.
