How old is your kid? This year, I decided that instead of bringing in a treat for my son's birthday, I am going to visit the class and we're going to make yarn tassel bookmarks.

I'd skip it if you don't want to! Really, no biggie!

My LO has brought home some goody bags and the hits have so far been been coloring books, play doh, stencils, $1 books, a few small markers tied in ribbon, and stickers. She still enjoys the usual "junk" like slinkies, bouncy balls, noisemakers, etc but they tend to get lost after a few days haha.

I would skip it and maybe do something edible?
I saw this really cute favor on Pinterest of animal cookies and homemade icing in little containers. Or maybe Rice Krispie pop on a stick?

When LO brings the goody bag junk home, she plays with it for a day and then I secretly throw it away. :silly: most of the time, she doesn't even notice.

do something simple like a couple markers tied with a ribbon - kids will love it, practical and cheap!

Thanks everyone! I think I'll skip this nonsense unless DH feels it makes us look cheap :silly: I agree, it's definitely more to impress the parents than for the kids. Though I really like the craft ideas!

@erinbaderin: interesting! They're a bit young for that I think, but I'm filing away the idea for later!

@LuLu Mom: @Baby Boy Mom: yeah, the best presents we got so far were crayons and paint!

@Greentea: usually they'll bring the bags and give the day care money to get pizza and cake. I saw pics from a birthday last week... that cake was tiny. I don't know how they fed 15 kids with it, and I'm sure there wasn't enough for the teachers. No way, we're buying our own!

Ugh, I hate them. I joke that if you send your kid to a school that doesn't allow you to bring in edible treats, you never have to buy playdoh. DS is turning 3 next month so I'm feeling the pressure. I was thinking about donating a book to the classroom instead. And how awful is it that I was almost going to talk myself out of it b/c how would the kids' parents know that I did that and then they'll think I cheaped out. Which made me realize that we do all of this crap to impress the parents and the kids really wouldn't care either way. Sure my kid loves when he gets a present/goodie bag. But that lasts about 3 seconds and he's on to the next thing.

I think it's perfectly ok to skip. I am really hoping my DD goes to parties without party favors every so often so that I can explain to her that it's not necessary and not important at all. Just being there to celebrate is enough.

I think it's fine to skip. I agree that goodie bags are mainly "junk", but I always keep the "junk" to use later. They come in handy for certain situations, like plane rides. If you lose something, no big deal, and then toss when you arrive. I've also used them to stuff plastic Easter eggs and my kids love it!

My LO just started a new school in August and has so far brought home maybe 3 goodie bags of useless junk. I really really really don't want to have to do them because I think they're such a waste. And that's a lot of money to spend on something that's a waste just for the sake of doing it because everyone else is doing it. I hope I can get away and feel ok with not doing it when the time comes.

Maybe I'll just donate a toy to the classroom and call it a day??

I like receiving goodie bags that can be consumed/dealt with/thrown out in a day. Like a simple mini-can of playdough that says something awesome would be helpful to keep LO entertained and useful.

As far as making....I just do one 'healthy' snack with something artsy attached.
