@Thehistoryofus: He is 8 mos as of yesterday and he's currently on 2 naps. He refuses the third one now. The bad part is that he's a cat napper to so the most naps he's a 30-40 min guy.

I had the same problem as Irene. LO was a great night sleeper. Then solids came along and it all went out the window. She started crawling and really moving shortly after starting solids so it may have been more her learning new skills but the problems started before she gained the skills so I donno.
I still swaddled her. Every time she has a sleep regression I go back to the swaddle, even now at 16 months. She works her little arms out but it just works for her to relax her little body. Our LO also became full of anxiety when we tried methods like Ferber. I ended up just letting her sleep with us most of the time but what has worked for us is just giving her comfort then laying her back in her bed. So she still gets comforted but as soon as she calms down she goes to lie down again. Sometimes it takes awhile but the next few nights are usually easier, whereas when we tried just letting her cry the next few nights were always mmmmuuuuuuchhhhhhh harder.

@caffeinated: oh ok the nap limit on the chart. i think the chart is assuming you have a bedtime of 6-8pm, depending on your lo's age.

olive wakes up by 3:30pm in order to have a 6:30 bedtime. that's been her schedule for the past 3 months. it's harder to get her to nap past 4pm because she has an internal clock. charlie was the same way, and most kids tend to be like that too.

i move bedtime around so that it's 3 hours after she woke up from her last nap. during the week it's 6:30, but on the weekends we're always off schedule.

@Mrs. Bee: for what bedtime is the 4pm nap limit (as per the WT chart)?

@Clementine: i agree, the last nap seems to end too early. you probably need to put him to bed earlier or try to get in a catnap (which i know for me is always impossible as she will fight it!). I once tried to extend her waketime to 4 hours to get her to bed at her usual bedtime, and it was impossible for her to go to sleep!

@Clementine: Have you introduced solids? It is really weird but for us, some point at 7 months when LO started eating more solids, we introduced rice porridge with chicken and that's when he started sleeping through the night (whereas he used to wake 1-2 times a night to nurse). My baby was EBF too. Maybe if he sleeps with a full stomach he'd sleep better.......

I also agree that he needs to nap well during the day to sleep well at night. Is he still doing 3 naps or 2? I remember reading that have him awake by 7am, then the first nap starts at around 9am (for us it has been 9:30am for a very long time), and the 2nd nap around 1-ish pm (2pm if he's a bit older). For us that works pretty well. My baby seldom really show signs of tiredness since 5-6 months, but if you put him down at 9:30am and 1:30am in his crib, he'd cry a bit, roll around, then fall asleep within minutes. Ignore him for a bit (maybe 10-15 minutes, seriously) even if he's rolling around, or sitting up and cry...etc. after you put him down. Don't rush in too quickly if he starts crying after napping for 15-20 minutes or so... sometimes they'd go back to sleep on their own. And usually my LO sleeps 40 minutes to 1.5+ hours (I usually wake him if he sleeps pass that).

Also, maybe try feeding him before he goes down for his nap, and/or ensure he naps on a full tummy? Maybe that'd get him nap a bit longer?

If my LO didn't take good solid naps before 3pm, he'd usually take a 3rd nap at around 4-5pm - but if that happens (if he naps after 4), I'd limit the nap to 15-30 minutes.

I dunno.... for us we are blessed with a baby who generally naps and sleeps pretty well (except when he transitions from 3 naps to 2 it confused us for a very long time, and we didn't know when to put him down for the 2nd nap for a long time). Best wishes to you....

@Thehistoryofus: ah yes I totally agree. Not all babies will fit within those guidelines, but it's a decent place to start. I was just hoping to offer some ideas she could try to help with her mil.

Sleep is still a challenge for us, and I definitely don't have it all figured out. I think it's one if the most difficult aspects of the first couple of years.... If not the most difficult!

@Mrs. Bee: I read something (probably on here) about how parents are so concerned about their kid fitting in developmental molds particularly for sleep. Parents that read all these methods that promise great sleep when often there are just bad sleepers and kids that probably need a lot more/less sleep then what is outlined. I was just try to offer support to the OP since she seemed well read on sleep methods. I think the books and everything are great but like the old saying goes it sure would be nice to have babies that come with manuals.

@Thehistoryofus: it is a general guideline, but it's funny that you point out that your lo didn't need as much sleep as the chart says because i recently started a thread saying that charlie and olive needed much more sleep than what was listed on the chart! i'll see if i can dig it up....

i do think max awake times definitely matter less as your lo gets older. for instance we've been able to push olive an extra 30 minutes without her getting too overtired for some time now.

@sammyfab has some great suggestions. we've done bedtimes as early as 4:30!!!! since naps would be harder for your mil, how about an early bedtime at 5:00 - 5:30?

I used that WT chart religiously from 3.5-6 months but then it didn't really apply to us as much. I will refer back to it when we transition from 2-1 naps! I agree with @Thehistoryofus that the sleep averages are high. The wake times are also conservative but that's because the goal is to not push a wake time to cause over tiredness. I would love to have a baby who sleeps as much as Olive does!!!

At 4 months my LO refused naps after 4pm and if the time between naps was too short, so I can understand why your LO would refuse a nap at 4:30. My best answer to that would be an earlier bedtime. We've done as early as 5:30 (with great results and NOT a super super early wake up).

I can only imagine how frustrating it is that your mil doesn't follow your instructions and won't help nap train your LO. It's old school grandma mentality that babies will only sleep when they show tired cues or that they'll sleep better at night with less day sleep. Blah!

If it helps, at 6 months my LO would be up for 2.25 hrs until his first nap then 2 hours between naps 2, 3 and bedtime. He needed that extra bit of time to be sleepy enough to take a good morning nap and then would take 2 45-min naps in the afternoon. You could also try giving your mil some set naptimes (8:15, 11:15, 2:15 with a 6am wake up) that she can try and follow.

@Mrs. Bee: In all due respect, I think that chart is a great guide, but both my LO and my friends LO both don't get nearly that much sleep in a day. I just question how accurate the chart may be.

How old is your LO now?

I think at 6 months, she was doing two naps a day and I know was up for more than 3 hours at a time (for example, we got her up for school at 6 am and should would nap around 10 and 3).

@Clementine: he's definitely overtired and not getting enough naps in the day time. I know it seems like he's not tired, but that's the way it is. olive appears wide awake then we put her in her crib, and she rolls around for a couple minutes then falls fast asleep.

can you show her this chart

https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GHo4keUb2TVJUlSL1kD6HQcEgaNFBmzoQoOzcpcyas/mobilebasic?authkey=CPXE1bsO&pli=1&hl=en

@Sammyfab: he's a cat napper, so he usually takes 1- 4o min nap then maybe either 1.5 or 30 min. He usually sleeps 2.5-3 hours between naps. I've tried to get my MIL to put him down every 2 hours, but she swears he is not tired. Last nap is over by 2:30 then he's in bed by 630-7 pm. I've asked her to nap him around 4:30 pm but she says he refuses. He usually wakes up at 6 am.

this has been working for me lately since olive has been sick and is waking up and wants me to hold her. i put her in her crib drowsy, and then i keep my hand on her until she falls asleep. since she fell asleep in the crib, she knows she was there when she fell asleep so she sleeps longer than if i put her in her crib asleep.

every baby is different so it's a little bit of trial and error.

how are his naps?

Ever since 6 mos, LO hasn't been sleeping well. His sleep training went down the window and resleep training using Extinction then regular Feber hasn't helped at all. He seems to get more agitated and then anxious to the point the minute we put him in his crib, he starts screaming.

Everyone keeps telling me to put him to bed later than 7 pm but I know that makes no sense since he seems to be tired. He isn't a great napper either. He will fall asleep but he refuses to put himself back to bed when he wakes up sometimes 3x a night. I'm also trying to wean him but he just wants to be nursed and sleep in our bed and not his crib.

Please any suggestions or advice! I am very consistent with his bedtime routine and he usually in bed between 630-7 pm. I don't know what to do and everyone seems to be giving me advice that is totally the opposite from all the baby sleep books I've read. Not sure what to do.
