I think it depends more on their personality/mood. DD1 went to daycare from 6 months and was much less outgoing than DD2 who is home with me! DD1 is a lot more outgoing now, but she is almost 4.

We have a nanny who takes her out on at least 2 play dates every day and she still doesn't really like strangers esp if they get too close! She will start wailing if a stranger tries to touch or hold her. I think she is naturally a little shy.

DD is home with a caregiver all day and has only had a few occasions of stranger danger. We went to dinner the other night and she ran over and hugged our waiter. (!)

My LO has been daycare for about 10 months now and he is still a very cautious kid at 25 months. I always joke that I never have to worry about him taking candy from a stranger...because he wouldn't go near a stranger with a ten foot pole! He's become a bit less shy and anxious and more friendly, but only if we are nearby. And personally, I think it's a good thing that he does have stranger anxiety. I mean...do we want our kids running to random strangers who look really nice and friendly and frolicking off into the sunset? :/

I stay home, and my eight month old is a very social, curious gal. She allows most, if not all, family and friends to engage with and hold her. However, I usually have to let her be and give some distance. If she sees me, she'll reach for me and whine.

I think that is all personality. My little guy has been in school since he was 18 months old and we had multiple hard transitions with school, people etc. and kids go through phases too where it is easier or harder to go to people. There are some real differences in daycare and sah kids which even out by kindergarten. Often (because like everything else it isn't everyone) they are ready for independent classes (like gymnastics) slightly earlier because they already have other teachers. But sah kids and daycare kids can be just as cautious each time.

My kid is so clingy you would never guess he is in full time school or that I work.

while socialization can have an effect, i think it's mostly personality. LO is great at daycare, where he has been since 3 months old (now 14 months), but in new situations he definitely takes his time getting comfortable--he doesn't cry or anything, just stands there, staring. i think he has more of a cautious personality. i see another girl at daycare who has been there for several months and still cries every time i look at her.

My daycare kiddo is still sooo shy and very cautious of new people.

Anything in routine? Totally outgoing and happy go lucky, but any change or new person, she is shy as heck and takes a while to warm up. She isn't outgoing in a new social setting, and is quite content hanging out on our lap watching.

I don't think it's a daycare vs. not at all, totally kid specific personality :)

I don't really see how it would be that affected by daycare, they would still always be seeing the same teachers and classmates, so stranger danger could definitely come into play!

I'm a SAHM, but how L feels about strangers has more to do with his mood than anything else. Sometimes he'll smile at everyone and be totally charming, and other times he's clingy.

My son was home with me for 2 years, he was always social, but he always had me in his line of sight. If I tried to leave him somewhere, no good. He'd cry uncontrollably for the entire time I was away, to the point where I had to come back.

Eventually, he's gotten over it, but there are still times when he's got separation anxiety, so I think it's less to do with the childcare, it's his personality, and it will likely be like this part of the time forever!

My LO is watched in our house by his awesome aunt/nanny, and this is something I worried about...but this kid has no fear of anyone. He runs up to and around people, waves, and smiles with no shyness whatsoever...maybe it'll kick in later? He's a year now, so I don't know.

I think it depends...I'm a SAHM and the only people who have watched LO are my mom and DH's mom. Yet he is pretty social--says hi to everyone everywhere, and will let himself be held/go up to most people. BUT this is also usually a situation where I or DH am there as well--he's never been in a situation with new people where we have just left him, so who knows how he'd react!

R is a social butterfly. i thought we were running into stranger danger at 10 months, but i realized it was the unfamiliar PLACE, not the people. once she knows a place, she doesn't care who is there! so when we've gone to YMCA or church child care, i always sit there for a minute while she gets used to her surroundings and finds a new friend or toy to play with and then i wave bye bye and she's fine.

is your LO shy? scared of strangers?

or do they easily go to others?

DS is a grandma-care baby ... he goes to anyone in the family or people he "knows" but def shies away from ppl that he doesn't recognize when they ask him to come to them.

however, at gymboree he's all over the place and around other parents no problem.

my friend's mom (whose LO is a daycare baby) compares our babies and says DS is like this because he's not socialized as well! :P

i think it's just his cautious personality! :)

(also on the flip side, if you have a daycare LO, are they more sociable and less weary of other ppl holding them, etc?)
