@Mommy Finger: My same age son is the same, only likes cozy pants and a tee but will wear jeans and a button up shirt for special occasions.

Hope you find something dressy that she is comrtable in.

@hitchhiker: It's intense! So far she's been pretty nice to strangers about it, mostly preferring to show off her twirly dresses than commenting on theirs. But we regularly have big, loud meltdowns about certain dresses being in the laundry at certain times. Also, I may have just bought the entire stock of target's sparkly bike shorts in 4T because of similar meltdowns.

My 6.5yo son is the same way about dress up clothes. He calls them handsome clothes and apparently they are the worst. The best I can do is find one long sleeved polo shirt and a pair of jeans to wear for family pictures in October through the holiday season. It's been a really long "phase" :)

@Mrs. Turtle: The twirly dress phenomenon cracks me up. A 3 year old threw me some shade last week by suggesting my dress was not twirly enough!

@hitchhiker: Glad you found something that works. And I'm glad you're supporting her in being herself! I have the opposite issue. O currently only wears dresses, and then only if she deems them twirly enough. And it's never predictable what dresses will be twirly enough on any given day.

@Silva: This sounds just like my kid. She describes exactly what she wants and then I can never find it. Luckily on the clothes front, we can both agree on Primary. I went to the website today, and she sighed, "Ohhh, I love primary." I need primary for shoes!

@hitchhiker: I spent half an hour looking for red shoes without white laces for my three year old today. Finally convinced him to accept the white laces by showing him Daniel tigers shoes.
Kids, man.

@Silva: she wants to wear running shorts and a tee!

@mrs.kiwi: agree, tunics often work in the winter. I'm struggling with summer.

@Mrs. Turtle: I think you hit on the struggle. She's really not girly. She just told me she wants to try khaki shorts and a polo, so thanks for the rec!

What does she want to wear? I don’t always like dresses, I often wear black chino style pants with a nice top/tank or wide leg linen pants.

Do tunics count as dresses? A longer cuter shirt/tunic plus leggings and cute shoes is plenty dressy enough for us. If she likes accessories she can throw on a cute necklace or big hair bow

@hitchhiker: At 6, does she have ideas of how she could dress up? If she's still wanting girly clothes, I'd go with capri leggings and a cute, dressier top. If she wants more typical boyish clothes, I'd go with that (button up shirt and khaki shorts?).

What about shorts in a dressier fabric and a pretty shirt? Something like these: https://www.gapcanada.ca/browse/product.do?cid=1054148&pcid=14417&vid=1&pid=467033003
https://www.gapcanada.ca/browse/product.do?cid=1054148&pcid=14417&vid=1&pid=440472003

Would she be willing to wear a skirt if she could wear shorts or leggings under it? I’m sure you’ve already tried but just in case.

@imadreamer: good idea. She has one causual romper that she'll wear. Maybe I'll try something dressier. I can't believe I didn't think of that since I'm a huge jumpsuit fan myself! Thanks!

My 6 year old daughter refuses to wear dresses. She is incredibly strong willed, and I don't have the energy to fight her on this. (Plus, I want her to develop her on sense of style.) However, I do want to impress upon her that there are occasions that one needs to dress up for (church, plays, holidays, etc.). But I have no idea what she should wear if it's not a dress. Do you have any ideas?

If it helps, her daily wear is athleisure--running shorts and a tee in the summer, and leggings and a tee in the winter.
