summer infant! they have very wide pressure ones, we have them at my parents.at home we have the play yard; instead of drilling it into the walls, we drilled into an ikea bookcase that's secured to the wall.

In a pinch I've pushed a couch up against that doorway in our house!

I second the playard option. Yes, you need to supervise them while in it because it can knock over but it serves as a nice barrier. we used ours across a long open doorway to prevent my dogs from going in the playroom.

@Foodnerd81: you can sometimes put those little felt or rubber pads you'd use to keep furniture from scratching the floor on the "feet" of a pressure mounted gate to protect your walls.

@ocean81: We had that same gate for our playroom and I liked it a lot. We have a similar sounding setup, the doorway looks like it could accommodate French doors and I didn't want to be drilling holes in it.

@Foodnerd81: We actually already took this gate down and no paint came off the walls! I think they sell wall protectors for them too.

@ocean81: that might work. We are wary of pressure mounted things because our gate ripped the paint off the walls in our condo. We had to repaint two entire walls because of it. I feel like it's worth it so
I can relax with her in the room but dh doesn't want to damage the doorway. And to be fair we already have so much work to do on the house as it is...

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: the free standing play yard is a life saver! But at almost a year my baby is getting pissed when I confine her in there! I haven't been in store lately but I feel like the double door is too wide for a pressure mount. Maybe not.

I don't remember the brand, but there were a couple pressure mounted baby gates only I saw at Babies R Us yesterday. I was in the market for freestanding pens. Have you visited one of the big box stores near you?

Are there any baby gates that clamp around doorways instead of drilling into them? We have a wide doorway to the living (like the size of French doors but it doesn't have actual doors on it). It would be so helpful to be able to contain my almost one year old in there but dh doesn't want to drill in the doorway for such a short term need. We just put a tension mounted gate at the bottom of the stairs at least but she climbs up to the first step where it's mounted and I'm nervous she will fall back onto the slate tile.
