For your 8 year old, my DD just sped through all of the Upside Down Magic books. Also, Boxcar kids. Roald Dahl is great, too. For your younger two, Magic Treehouse series is great.

My princess-loving 4 year old loves the Mercy Watson series. They are a "first chapter book", so only pictures on every other page or so, and fairly long as far as picture books go. But my daughter loves them so much we will read an entire one in one sitting (takes about 20 minutes when I'm reading). There's nothing girly about them. Mrs. Starfish wrote that her girls love this series, too.

We love the STEM series like...
Iggy Peck Architect
Ada Twist Scientist
We also love
What do you do with and idea
What do you do with a problem
There's also a great series of biographies called Ordinary People Change the World

-The Journey trilogy by Aaron Becker is a must have, in my opinion.
-Margaret Atwood has a great series of longer picture books that are funny and clever
-Runaway Mummy and Goodnight Goon are fun "spooky" books for Halloween
-Herve Tullet's books are fun
BramblyHedge Series

if you want some fun read aloud chapter books: Ramona, Gooney Bird Greene, and Tumtum and Nutmeg, have been our favorites lately

@jhd: Oh yes! The older two love Kate DiCamillo (Mercy Watson author) - I forgot those since they're more of a "chapter" picture book.

Thank you everyone for the great suggestions! Lots of reminders about things we've read before (and may want to get again), and lots of new material, too!

@catgirl: yes to all Chris Van Dusen! We really love Circus Ship in addition to the If I Built books (and it’s fun to see his illustration style in books he didn’t write like Mercy Watson).

I also love Snail and the Whale (same author/illustrator as the Gruffalo). It’s so soothing to read and a nice message.

@PinkElephant: I have been working my way through this list of funny books requesting a few each week from the library. https://happilyeverelephants.com/home/funny-childrens-books
Love so many of the books mentioned above. My 6yo loves Mo Willems books. We started reading them last year but we have been rereading the Pigeon and Elephant and Piggie books we own and checking out everything else we can find by him at the library.

Another new favorite is the Mercy Watson series.

Dragons Love Tacos is one that I actually like reading, along with Giraffes Don't Dance and Be Brave Little Penguin. Those last 2 might be a little on the young end for your girls.

We have Rosie Revere, Engineer, and there are several others in that series that are all good and encourage STEM!

I agree with dragons love tacos (and the second one) and the book with no pictures

We also love the if I built a school, if I built a house, and if I built a car books - really anything by Chris Van Dusen. We like the Andrea Beaty books - there are female characters but I don’t think the books are girly. Lately DD really likes The three little wolves and the big bad pig, Dragon post, Jabari jumps, stellaluna, the gruffalo, room on the broom (and again most books by Julia Donaldson), the most magnificent thing, and the adventures of taxi dog.

Looking for suggestions for picture books with more "boyish" or at least gender-neutral themes. I have three little girls, ages almost 4, 6, and 8 (the older two read on their own, but still really love hearing picture books/reading them to each other)....and as you can imagine, a lot of our book collection is centered around unicorns, princesses, dollies kittens, puppies, etc. I love these stories, as do they, but am looking to branch out a little bit.

We'd love to read more about monsters, dragons, rockets.....but right now our library is closed and we have to make specific hold requests online, so it's hard to just browse without having a few specific titles to use as a starting point.

They LOVE "Creepy Carrots", "A Creepy Pair of Underwear", "Wolfie the Bunny", the "Pig the Pug" series...I'd like to find more things like this (ie, a little bit of silly is great). Thanks in advance!
