@dori: Wanship is an extremely small town it looks like, so I don't know if anyone can specifically speak to it. I live in Utah County and while there's a ton of LDS folks, you don't have to be LDS to live here. As long as they know the vocab (ward=local congregation, stake=groups of local congregations) they'll get along fine.

@toniamandaking: are those the Edge homes up on Suncrest? It's my understanding that they aren't in our HOA, therefore, will not have access to the clubhouse or pool. Other than that, it's essentially just another subdivision in Suncrest.

@toniamandaking: Suncrest is about a 10 minute drive from the valley. The drive is not difficult by any means. We have a restaurant up here that also carries your very basic necessities. We chose Suncrest since it was important to me to be out of the inversion...that stuff is gross.

Also, we have a clubhouse with a gym and some rooms available to rent. There is also an outdoor pool.

We get a substantial amount of snow, so there is that to consider, as well. They do a great job of keeping our roads clear, but good snow tires and a 4 wheel drive vehicle is necessary, IMO.

@ustechie: Ah, Suncrest! I have looked at houses up there online. I have heard that that drive is difficult and that there is nothing up there so just to get to the store is 15min? Can you tell me your experience with that? We live in Montana and are moving there in the next few months. Depending on when our house sells. My kids are 4, 8 and 11. We are not Catholic and I don't really want my kids to go to a private school so we would go public school.
Thanks so much for responding!

@toniamandaking: Hi there! We're on our 3rd year here- we love it! It's definitely a change from Ohio, but it's grown on us. We have 2 boys (5 & 3) and we live in Suncrest. I love it up here! You said you're nervous about it...can I answer any questions for you? Where are you moving from?

We're Catholic and my son attends a private school. We're super happy with it and have made many friends- both LDS and non LDS. I was really nervous about it at first, but I've found it to be a non issue for us (although I don't have any experience with kids and the public schools).

I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have. It's definitely a big decision!

@JMOM: Thanks so much for responding! No, we are not set on any location. Schools are our #1 priority. My husband and I both work from home however, he is looking at working from a co-working space closer into SLC. We are looking mainly at the Sandy and Draper area. My family that is LDS lives in Utah County but I know the mormon population goes way up there. If you don't mind me asking, what grade is your daughter? (Big difference if she is in K or 5th). I really appreciate any help you can give me.

@toniamandaking: We've been here going on 4 years and I've personally found that the whole mormon thing isn't as big a deal as you read online. We live in Draper and our neighbors are nice and my daughter has made friends, no problem, but she's still only in elementary so you never know. There are so many people moving in that I think it won't be as much of an issue as it used to be. Sorry, I don't know anything about Alpine and Highland, I think I've only been in that area once. We looked at Daybreak and it's nice but it is kind of far out there and I've heard there the HOA is pretty strict. Do you have to be in a certain area because of commutes?

@philamom @USTECHIE @JMOM
Sorry this is my first post but I came across this blog because we are moving to SLC. I hope some of you all see this because I know it's an old thread. What have you guys found out as far as neighborhoods go and the whole mormon conversation? My kids will be in elementary and middle school so schools is important. I have looked a Suncrest but have some nerves there, I have looked at Daybreak but it seems far, and I have mormon family in Utah country but up near Alpine and Highland the schools look awesome and the houses seem like you get a lot of bang for your buck. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

@philamom: Hi, we've lived in SLC for 3 years and love it! We live in Draper and our kids go to public school in Sandy. My daughter went to the catholic school in Draper for 2 years and we liked the school, but we aren't catholic and we heard great things about our local school so we switched back to public. I've heard good things about the catholic school in Sandy, as well. The real estate market is pretty competitive here. I'm sure there are other Bees who have lived here longer who can give more info on actual neighborhoods. I will say that I moved here not really excited about living in SLC, especially after researching online, but now we love it and would really hate to leave.

@ustechie: Hi! I came across your original post after searching similar situation on Google. My husband is considering a job offer that would bring us to the Sandy area (we are from suburban Philadelphia). We are catholic and have 2 young children and I am searching for any advice on finding a great diverse neighborhood. My main concern is for my children- I don't want them to feel left out especially since we would be leaving all of our family and friends back east. Thanks in advance for (hopefully) seeing and reading this. :).

We haven't been here long enough to go through an inversion yet, but my DH is very concerned about it, that is part of the reason we're looking in Sandy and Cottonwood heights. They're not out of the inversion but they are at a higher elevation than the valley. We don't know if it will make a difference, but we figure it can't hurt. I have driven up to Suncrest and looked around and they have gorgeous views. But, I wouldn't be comfortable driving up and down the mountain during winter. I was kind of freaked out by it in the summer, but I also didn't grow up around mountains. But the house prices do seem to be a little cheaper there and they have really nice amenities like a pool, clubhouse, playgrounds, etc.

@ustechie: ya alpine and highland area are super nice. And of course I won't say anything bad about draper. And I don't know if this makes a difference but my husband didnt grow up Mormon and lived in LA/Arizona/Georgia his whole life and moved here before he was Mormon and loved it. And anytime we invite our non mormon friends or family to stay with us they love it! So hopefully you will too :)

Also there is a pretty good hospital in Murray (I think) called Intermountain medical center that has a cool labor and delivery ward. All my friends and fam are happy with it. I don't know if it's mormony or not? But it seems cool. Well and it's a lot closer if you do move to sandy as opposed to downtown. Good luck! And keep us updated!!!

Keep in mind that you are going to need what insurance you guys are going to have before you choose an OB because Regence has Intermountain as out of network and Intermountain has University facilities as out of network and we're pretty much a two shop town.

My partner and I just looked up some stats out of curiosity. Riverton and draper are 85% Mormon. You get into Sandy and some of the other places mentioned above and you are down to 60%.

Please look up and listen to the radio west podcast about Mormons and non-Mormons co-existing here. It gives a rosier outlook than is actually happening, but it was nice work and got a lot of people talking. http://m.radiowest.kuer.org/?utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F#mobile/719

Just wanted to jump on and say Hi. We just moved to SLC for my husband's job and are also non-lds. We are looking in Cottonwood Heights, Holliday and Sandy. We will probably end up in Sandy. We found a house we really like in Draper but it is probably too far of a commute to my husband's work in Murray. We have enrolled my kindergartner in a Catholic school for a year and then we will re-evaluate next year. Good luck, moving with kids is not the easiest thing in the world.

@anonysquire: I just looked up cedar hills and it's south and east of Riverton, sort of east of American Fork.

OP- you might want to consider the Riverton area as we'll. it would significantly cut the commute.
