@sloaneandpuffy: The blood test is very expensive, so we usually do the skin test first and then move to other testing modalities only of the skin test is positive. Here's the CDC fact sheet :). http://www.cdc.gov/tb/topic/testing/default.htm?mobile=nocontent

@sloaneandpuffy: No we dont get it as part of the rchildhood vaccination schedule unless a baby is thought to have an increased risk of coming into contact with TB.

All babies born in some areas of inner-city London (where TB rates are higher than in the rest of the country) should be offered the BCG vaccination.

The BCG vaccination is recommended for all babies up to one year old who:

are born in areas where the rates of TB are high
have one or more parents or grandparents who were born in countries with a high rate of TB

I live in central London so I wonder if my baby will have to get it?!

@Mrs. Jacks: yes our pedi mentioned that -- she told us if we planned to live in the US we could skip it, for that reason. But we don't have plans to live in the US for now so we just stuck with the Mexican recommendations. Hope it won't be too awful if/when they have to get a skin test. Or maybe in that case it would be better to go straight to a blood test?

I wouldn't do bcg if I thought I was going to move back to the US since it makes interpretation of the us tb test more confusing.

C didnt have to get it. She was born at an NHS hospital but her pediatrician is on an american military base so, thats probably why.

Yes! And before the scar the baby gets this crazy pus boil (not in all cases but many). The size of the scar varies but it sucks when you have a sleeveless top. I guess having TB sucks more tho.

Does it still cause that big round scar? I have a bunch of foreign born friends who have it, and I think it's such a bummer.

I know this vaccine is not given to babies in the US but both my kids have had it. Did your baby get the BCG? Is it not the grossest vaccine of them all? Yuck!
