Portland, ME is one of my most favorite places for a getaway. Lots of good food and outdoor activities and less touristy than the cape or downeast, though the beaches aren't really swimmable as an adult (too cold), but I remember having a great time as a kid.

Like a couple of others have said, there are also some great places in the Adirondacks that are family friendly. If you like resorts check out the Sagamore on Lake George.

And a shout out for my hometown, Burlington, VT. Summers here are the best. The Inn at Shelburne Farms is a BEAUTIFUL property built by the Rockefeller family back in the day, that's actually on the same estate as a working farm museum that my nieces and nephews (aged 1-5) love. There's a small aquarium/science center, multiple municipal beaches with good swimming and tons of hiking for any fitness level. There are also lots of good restaurants and more microbreweries per capita than anywhere else in the country (if you're into that sort of thing). Also if you're in Jersey, Newark is one of the few airports that has multiple direct flights to Burlington. It's only about 45 minutes in the air and you will be in a tiny tin can, but the airport is only like 10 minutes outside the heart of town.

@JLC53: oooh if u remember (hehe), lemme know how the quarters is! FYI, in case you are interested, we did six flags, magic forest, cruise, the fort Henry museum... million dollar beach, arcades.

We ate at bistro Le roux (really good), log jam (pretty good), Caldwell house (very popular, but I thought it was just ok).

@JLC53: for a 2 yo that might be tough. There are lots of family oriented activities but geared towards older kids like real mountany active things. I would highly highly recommend it though if it's close to you! It was a 5 hr drive for us but we will def be back.

Since you have a 2 yo maybe great wolf lodge in the poconos? I went there this past April with our 1 & 4 yo boys and would highly recommend! They have a 2 bedroom suite option that helped us stay sane during the trip and tons and tons of kid activities all throughout the day and night.

@JLC53: yes! We stayed at the South Seas Island Resort on Capitva. It is very much a family resort. We stayed in a beachfront condo on the south end of the resort and it worked great for us.

@purplelilac: Something to look into. Is there resorts to stay at? My family actually lives about 1 1/2 hours north of there in Port Charlotte, which we visit often. I have been to Sanibel, but don't remember it having resorts.

We went to Capitva Island on the Gulf coast of Florida in April when I was 30 weeks pregnant and it was amazing. We stayed at a very family friendly resort, the area is outside Miami-Dad, and I think we only got 2-3 bug bites between the 4 of us, which is record-low for my family.

Sort of random but I've always wanted to take my kids to Mackinac Island in MI. (You don't have to stay on the island, you can take the ferry in the day. But the Grand Hotel for a night or two also looks so nice.)

@Modern Daisy: Is it family oriented? Looks amazing for a romantic couple getaway, but I am not sure appropriate for a family. What are your thoughts? My son would be 2 at the time. It is very close and drive-able for me. Something my husband and I will can check out even just for a romantic getaway if we can ever sneak away!

Are you set on going south in summer? We just did an Eastern Canadian cruise (Montreal, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Bar Harbor (Maine) and Boston) and it was a lot of fun. No beach days, but plenty of pool time! There is a one hour time change with some of Canada, but that's totally manageable.

We just had a great trip to southern Maine. The beach was really fun for my kids. Tons of tide pools at low tide with so many crabs and even baby lobsters. There are lots of motels that have separate bedrooms or condos you can rent. Portland and Portsmouth, nh are nearby and fun to check out too. Water is chilly but refreshing!

@JLC53: We stay in a condo each year our friends own. But check out Seaside community in Destin (many on vrbo.com). It's a gated community that is gorgeous. It has several pools and they give you golf cart rides to the beach. I know there are several resorts all along the coast in Destin too.

Probably closest airport is VPS, Fort Walton/Destin airport.

Another option I know that has resorts is Pensacola, FL. Close to Destin and lots to do.

@JLC53: We stay at a timeshare that belongs to my dad, which I wouldn't recommend (not that it's bad, it's just very hard to get a hold of any management there which can be stressful). Also, if you do decide to go, stay away from Petite Travelers for baby rental stuff. We did not a good experience with them. The island itself is so nice though. We will be going back soon.
