Yep I agree with @NovBaby1112: waking after 40 minutes has always clearly indicated a sleep deprivation/early bedtime need for us

@autumn865: hmmm I think she def sounds overtired and it's causing the issues like @edelweiss said. What time are you trying to put her down for a nap after she wakes that early? I would try putting her to bed even earlier than 6:30, like 5:45/6 just because it sounds like she is so tired. Then if she gets a solid 11-12 hours she might be more rested during the day and be able to transition sleep cycles during her nap, etc.

Nothing to add but I'm sorry, MY LO does the same thing... it's a struggle to keep her up until 7/7:30 then she wakes up before 6... SIGH.

@Anutka: honestly there might be :( ugh when do the regressions stop and their sleep is relatively consistent?
@edelweiss: I think this is what is going on because she is just soooo tired before bed. We put her to bed a bit earlier so we will see what happens but we also have "other opinions" stating that the reason she wakes up early is because she goes to bed too early. So who the heck knows
@loveisstrange: oh my gosh I dread the day she stops napping!

My daughter stopped napping at 22 months. It sucks. :/ However, she sleeps like crazy all through the night now. 12-13 straight hours without a peep. She goes to bed easy too.

oh, baby sleep and naps, why is it so confounding. is this her only nap of the day?

i'll share some of my experience in case it is helpful: LO (not 17 months) was nap deprived for a long long time because he doesn't nap well at daycare. he was also getting up at 4.30am. it was driving me bonkers. i called a sleep consultant and she said that what was likely happening was that because of the nap deprivation, his mind was in awake mode too much which creates the vicious cycle in that it was hard for him to soothe himself back to sleep in the wee hours of the morning when a sleep cycle ended.

perhaps something similar is going on with the 40-minute nap? in that one sleep cycle ended, and she probably needs another one, but she doesn't get it because her mind is too "awake" to bridge the hump to the next cycle? a couple of times when my LO has woken up early from a nap, i tried leaving him be for about 10-15 minutes. he sometimes falls back asleep.

sorry for the novel.

My 20 month old hasn't napped since Saturday :( and when she does nap she is up until 10pm.

Is there some kind of 2 year regression??

My 22 month old aparently hates naps! I put her down when she is obviously tired and often asking for a nap. Once she's down, however, she will wake up after 40 minutes in absolute hysterics. She pulls herself together for the day after and is fine until about 5:45/6 pm when she's falling alsleep practically in the bathtub and is passed out by 6:30. But then come the morning she's up at 4:45/5 am (OMG) and we go through the cycle all over again. Please help!
