@greencraftycello: Hi and welcome. Tracking meals is definitely one of the big pieces of Noom. I totally agree that tracking can be eye opening, for me it made me realize how many times during the day I was grabbing a little snack here or there that I definitely didn’t need.

@lindseykaye: Wow 33 lbs is huge! You should be really proud. Don’t psych yourself out about the next bit, though, slow and steady wins the race.

As for me I’ve been doing Noom for 6 weeks and I’m down a few pounds but I’m breastfeeding so I’m taking it easy on restriction/vigorous exercise and focusing more on moderation and whole foods. It has really helped me to plot a rolling average of my weight to prove that despite day to day fluctuations I am on a (slow) downward trend. I do feel like I’m setting up good habits, though, regardless of the number on the scale.

@lindseykaye: 33 pounds is great! That’s fantastic!!

This is my fourth day of tracking, so very early, but so far so good. A lot of it has been portion sizes for me, so using an app and writing everything down has been pretty eye opening.

@greencraftycello: Welcome! Logging meals and tracking calories is one of the main parts of Noom which sounds like what you’re doing with LoseIt. How is it going?
I think it’s smart to have a few goals along the way - it’s great motivation to keep going when you reach them.

@yellowbeach: Man that is a bummer. I have gmail and I would be so upset if this happened! I hope you can find another option if it’s something you’re interested in!

Update for me: It’s apparently been another 5 weeks since my last post (dang, time is such a mystery these days). I’ve been feeling good and trying to stay consistent. It’s been about 5 months on Noom now and I’m down 33 lbs. i fee like I’m in a weird spot, having reached my “starting”weight from last time I made a big effort to get in better shape and lose weight.

On one hand, I know if I just keep going it will eventually happen. And, I’ve made big progress and am really proud! On the other hand I’m worried the next bit will be harder and slower and I’ll mess it up 🤷🏼‍♀️

Not sure if it would be ok to join everyone here (seems to be the only active weight loss thread). I am not using Noom (cost prohibitive for me right now), but logging food on the premium version of the LoseIt app.

Had our second baby last March, and had really been afraid to cut any calories because of breastfeeding. At almost a year past her birth, I am feeling ready to get to a more comfortable weight. Would like to lose 40 total pounds, but would be happy with 20 until she is weaned (probably going to go to 18 months). I just feel sluggish at this weight, and am looking forward to feeling more myself.

So not so fun Noom update for me... I got bumped out of my account for "security safety" and when I tried to log back in, I could never get the password right. When I tried to reset it, (8 times) the email never came to my gmail (checked SPAM, trash, everywhere) and Noom's only solution was to provide a non-gmail address to change the account to... well I wasn't going to use my work one for lots of reasons...

So I cancelled because I couldn't regain access to my account - which is a shame because I liked Noom. :(

@HappyBaker: @karenbme: Thank you! I think it's just frustrating because it feels like self-sabatogue. I have had 3ish pounds to go for weeks and seem to be thwarting my own progress. I do agree that having a better mantra will help. I think part of it is that I haven't been reading the articles because they are about things that don't seem to apply at all. I just need to read them anyway.

@minimalistmom: what if you try adding back in one healthier habit every few days? Like try focusing just on getting back to a good breakfast first, then the next thing etc. I feel like sometimes it’s hard to go from nothing to ALL the things.

@lindseykaye: yay for good bloodwork and blood pressure! BP is one reason I started Noom, my 3rd pregnancy triggered crazy BP issues and I was on medication for a while but stopped when I lost weight a few years ago. Now that I’ve gained it all back I know my BP is a mess again so I’m trying to get it under control with diet and exercise so I can hopefully avoid the medication!

@lindseykaye: Boo! BMI is a worthless metric in micro, which has been proven multiple times, but it just keeps sticking because it’s easy and people are lazy. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this.

@minimalistmom: I’m sorry you’re struggling! The holidays are so hard for any routine. My college volleyball coach assigned us all mantras every season and one year mine was ‘mistakes are never permanent.’ Idk if that helps at all, but it’s something I always come back to when I feel myself blaming/spiraling even 10+ years later. I like it better than ‘oh well’ because it lets you acknowledge that you made a mistake and that acknowledgment, for me at least, takes the edge off the shaming, and helps me refocus on the future.

Ugh...I am feeling frustrated with myself. Things had been going do wonderfully on Noom and I am just feeling like it's hard to get back to my previous momentum before the holidays. Noom had taught me not to shame myself and to just chalk it up to an "oh well," but I am having trouble getting past that part and getting back to how things were before. Any one else?

I will add that I am really glad to have the mindset tools from Noom right about now which are helping me take this in stride and not chuck all my effort out the window out of anger and binge. I’m going to call that a big non-scale victory today.

I *know* it’s an easy tool and lets them be consistent with their evaluations but ugh. Trying not to let it get to me and cast a shadow on my great progress but it’s hard not to be both annoyed and discouraged.

Is anyone else on here breastfeeding? I EPed for 13 months and was maintaining about 50% of my daughter's daily intake on 2 pumps per day since early Dec. but have lost significant volume over the past few days. It's possible my period is on the way, but the timing is a little suspicious. I know vigorous cardio can cause a drop in supply so I haven't changed my exercise routine at all, but can moderate dieting?

@HappyBaker: That's so great!! I, too, have been on and off of weight watchers (for like 20 years!) and I honestly think it is meant to be a revolving door. And they constantly change and rebrand it so it is "new." I am not knocking WW, I know some people have really had lifetime weight loss and that is amazing, but it wasn't me. I needed MORE. I needed the psychological element to help heal my relationship with food and I will say it is working. It gently changes the way you think about food. I was so worried that the whole green/yellow/red thing would be damaging for me, but it's kind of the opposite really because it's just about calorie density and I don't even look at the colors anymore. I also love that if you go over your calories, you don't get shamed at all unlike WW. They just want you to say "oh well! I fed my elephant, let's try again tomorrow." That leads to lasting change and something you can do without keeping track of points. No shame, just a learning opportunity.

@karenbme: I went in and set my goal to both “turtle” and “cheetah” to see what the goals would be (1210-1710 for me). If I’m within this range, I consider my goal met since it’s still at a deficit. I do have my goal set for 1210 to display but most days I do go above that by some. There have been days under 1200, and days I’m closer to 2k+ too.

@yellowbeach: I feel like that’s so much of what Noom is about when it comes to goal setting. Finding out (either through the lessons or your own experience) what works for YOU and setting goals accordingly. So maybe you need a more generous calorie limit so you can hit that every day, or maybe you’re ok with not always meeting calorie budget but are completing all the lessons and tracking meals. Lots of flexibility.

@yellowbeach: slow and steady for sure. I haven’t changed my goal, but I also feel like I’m too type A about meeting goals and would totally burn out on carrots and hunger and then feel like a failure when I messed up if I went in on a goal. Instead I’m reading the articles and paying attention to colors and what decisions I’m making.

@lindseykaye: totally agree logging dinner first helps make the day work! And also makes this feel like it isn’t a “diet” since I’m still eating what my family eats for dinner, I’m just adjusting my breakfast and lunch to make it work, and adding more veggies to my dinner plate.

@karenbme: I’m set to 1200 calories but it gives you extra if you work out, I’ve been able to stay pretty close to that by keeping my breakfast and lunch fairly low calorie. For breakfast I have a light multigrain English muffin with 1 tablespoon of jam, and lunch varies but is usually around 300ish calories. I’ve even had room for some Christmas stocking candy most days! I think also definitely check calories against actual packaging because a lot of stuff is way off.

@lindseykaye: great job on the logging! 👏 I agree the recipe tool is really helpful. Are you really able to stick to 1200 calories though? I’m only a week in, but the best I’ve done is like 1500. Either way I know I’m eating less than I used to, snacking is my Achilles heel and I’ve definitely doing better with that with the accountability of logging.

It’s been a little while so I wanted to check in after the holidays have officially ended 😭 I felt like I had a good handle on things and kept up my goals for meal tracking (but not daily weights). I have not missed a single meal log since I joined and am at 339 tonight!

I wanted to share something that I found really helps me stay on track. If I pre-log my dinner, I can better judge my other portions/options for the day. Dinner is my priority meal - especially wanting to just eat what my family eats without substitutions for myself. And when I log those foods first I am far less likely to go over my budget. Seems simple but took me a while to do!
I have also been using the recipe function a lot and it’s really helpful for repeat meals I make often.

I am a few weeks in and I think I am finally shifting from this being a diet to this just being a way to introduce better habits into my life and I love it! I've done WW on and off for literally ten years and it has never "stuck" because I always felt deprived. On Noom, I knew we'd be eating McDonald's yesterday for my son's birthday lunch, so I had a healthy breakfast and dinner and it was no big deal to fit into my day. I think what I love most is that each day is a fresh start, instead of on WW where if you blew your weekly points you were done for the whole week. I also have never read or counted calories, and they make SO much more sense than points ha. It's so easy to just look at a package or menu and know what fits into my day. Though Noom's database does suck, I just usually enter the calories myself.

I recently made two small changes that have helped a lot - one was to put the fruit basket on our kitchen island front and center instead of buried in a corner, and our whole family has been eating so much more fruit because of it. I also started drinking a ton of water, I have a 30 oz cup so I try to drink one before my coffee, one before/with lunch, and one with dinner/the rest of the day.
