I'm sorry you're going through this! When my LO had thrush, I wasn't diagnosed myself, but the Dr told me to put Monistat on my nipples after every feeding. That seemed to do the trick in our case, I didn't have to take anything orally.

@Anagram: definitely take probiotics and give some to LO if you are comfortable. Thursh is a beast - i'm so sorry! :(
Our rule (which was awful to enforce) is that anything that touched my boobs or DS' mouth was a single-use item before being washed with vinegar, sterilized, or thrown out.

So my OB just called in prescriptions for APNO and Diflucan and told me to take both. But online says Diflucan is just a last resort. Should I take it anyway or wait to take it?

Guess I should stock up on probiotics for all of us. This has been one hell of a week and it's only Tuesday! LO 1 is just getting over strep, after we all just got over really bad coughing colds--and now me and LO 2 have thrush.

I wish I could just set off a sanitizing bomb in my house at this point.

Aggggh! I had a lot of BF discomfort, and my OB gave me an rx for a cream to rule out thrush. (I don't think we actually had thrush.) She told me to apply it after BFing and then wait like an hour or something before nursing again.

Side note: The best thing for me when I was really sore were those Soothies from Lansinoh.

A vinegar wash helped my nips out. Your OB should be able to call in diflucan for you. It's a lot of sterilization. To make it easier on myself, I limited her to a single paci all day and sterilized that one at night. At that point, we weren't using bottles, but when we were, I sterilized the nipples every night. Good luck! Thrush is the worst.

Clean send scrub the shields between each use. My doc had me apply gynelotrimin cream to my nipples 2x daily, and I used the medela breast shells during the day, regular clean nursing pads at night. We washed everything in the house too! Swing inserts, playmat, RnP insert, all our bedding, etc. Anything LO might have touched with her spit or my nipples. Good luck!

@Anagram: I would do it as much as possible. Just drop them in the bowl of vinegar wash after each feeding and rinse before next use. For breast pads I would change when they get wet or maybe twice a day?

@T.H.O.U.: Okay, I do use disposable nursing pads, but I'm pretty lazy about changing them--with thrush, how often should I change them?

And the vinegar soak for the nipple shields is a good idea. Do I have to do it after every single feeding?

Yuck. Vinegar also kills yeast so if you can't boil them, soaking in a vinegar/water mix and scrubbing clean may help. You can also wipe your nipple with vinegar to help keep the area clean and dry. Make sure you use disposable nursing pads and wash bras and stuff daily (with vinegar).

My LO had thrush and I had no symptoms. I think I gave it back to her once too. And I would assume you do need to do something about the nipple shields.

So LO has thrush--both in her mouth and a yeast diaper rash. The doctor gave us nystatin cream for the diaper rash and some kind of drops for LOs mouth.

I BF with a nipple shield, but I can only assume that if LO has it in her mouth (white spots all over the inside of her lips), that it's probably on my nipples, too, right?

And now that I'm thinking about it, they do hurt a bit, but I just thought it was LOs bad latch. I guess I need to make a doctor's appointment with my OB, but what should I do for my nips in the meantime?

Do I boil the nipple shields? Can they even be boiled? How long do I boil them? Do I REALLY have to boil the shields every time I use them? (guess I will need to buy a lot more, so I don't have to be boiling overnight).

Blah....I'm pretty down about this. We already have BFing issues and now this.
