@Mrs.Pinecone316: the actual injection site is about an inch higher than the red mark, but it is still definitely on the side, nearly underside of her leg. Is there any disadvantage to that location? If so, I'll be vocal about shot location next time.

Glad you got it figured out. I have to say though, as peds nurse that is the oddest place I've ever seen a shot on the leg.

Thanks everyone! I ended up taking LO in the next day. The redness had turned mostly pink but she had developed a handful of bumps in the same area. According to the ped, it could either be a skin infection related to the actual injection or a very rare reaction to the chicken pox vaccine which can cause a small number of pox like bumps at the injection site. They are leaning towards infection the pox reaction doesn't usually include generalized redness. She's been on an antibiotic and topical cream for a few days and it seems to be clearing up.

@Madison43: I know I'm late to the party but I'm a medical assistant in a Family Practice office. As a few people mentioned already the MMR can cause a reaction like this up to 10 days after. My son actually had this same reaction after his 1yr vaccines at the beginning of October. My sons see the Dr. I work for. My dr did go ahead and treat DS2 with 7 days of Keflex just in case and it did go away.

With the MMR, reactions can happen 1-4 weeks later. Personally, I'd watch it for another day or two. I'm sure it will resolve itself.

It seems really far on the back of her leg to be from the vaccine but the fact that it is hot I would probably have it looked at. I am a worrier though and usually go for things for piece of mind.

MMR or chicken pox (can't remember which) can cause a reaction as many as 10 days after the vaccine, but I would take her in to be safe.

Could it be a reaction to the bandaids? Did she wear them for a long time? My skin gets annoyed if I wear bandaids too long.

@Mrs. Pickle: that's what mosquito bites look like on me too. Maybe a bug bite but kind of coincidental that it's at the injection site? Also, we've had temps around 40 degrees this week. Too cold for mosquitoes I thought.

I've never seen a reaction like this! I would think the doctor has, though, so can you send the picture to their office so they can take a look? Or maybe come in for peace of mind...

Is there any chance she might have gotten a mosquito bite there? That's exactly what bites look like on my DD. Nine days seems like a long time for a reaction! When I'm doubt I'm always pro bring them in to be seen. I'm that mom that took my daughter in for a cold... 😐

I could be wrong but I thought a mild reaction, such as above, ten days after the MMR was considered normal.... I'd double check that though with your peds office.

@LBee: it is one of the sites. There were 2 - if you zoom in you can still see the outline of the bandaids. The redness is trending downward - meaning the actual injection site is at top of when the redness starts, not in the middle.

My son had a similar reaction in appearance, but in much larger scale. It was 3 days (I believe) after his vaccines. The 9 days is throwing me off a little because usually a vaccine reaction happens within 1 to 7 days. His was a vaccine reaction and was hot to the touch. They did have me bring him in, but again it was a very large reaction.
Also, is that where she had the vaccine? It looks far back on her legs for a shot site.

LO2 had her 12 month vaccines 9 days ago - aside from normal fussiness she had no reaction to note. This morning, she woke up with this on her leg. It is raised and hot. If it happened immediately after the shot, I would think it has normal, but more than a week later? The nurse at the ped's office was not super helpful - "bring her in if you think she needs to be seen or just keep an eye on it". Has anyone experienced this before?
