@SeptMomma12:  Thanks!
@Becky:  Yuck, that sounds miserable!

Update: She's made almost a full 180 today, though appetite is still not great. Doc said likely a bit of a sinus infection since the fever got better and then worse again. So we are treating that and just pushing through

Totally normal. I’m not a toddler, but I had the full-blown (so respiratory and lots of nausea but no puking, plus all the fevers, chills, aches, etc.) and today is the first day my stomach feels normal. I got hit with the flu 12/3 so that’s just over 2 weeks. My doctors office said feeling crappy for 2 weeks is completely normal (but not fun of course).

My 2 year old had the flu over Thanksgiving and it took a good week for her to be even close to back to normal. She's got a huge appetite normally and she went about 3 days without anything but water and ice pops and was just totally exhausted. Doctor wasn't concerned as long as she was drinking. She definitely dropped some weight but it finally seems to be returning now.

@Mama Bird: Thanks! It is so scary.
@skipra: Sometimes I feel like I'm the one with PTSD after all of the months of not eating enough!
@DesertDreams88: Thanks, I'm glad we are not alone.
@2littlepumpkins: Oh man. I'm sorry, that must be miserable. Luckily I'm feeling a little better now. O perked up last night and ate a decent dinner, but has a fever again this morning. Ugh.
@gingerbebe: Yeah, we have tried all of the things we'd never feed her normally. Unfortunately she doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, so even ice cream and popsicles have been duds.
@LAZB:  We've tried all of those.😢

My dd has the flu two weeks ago, and I’m pretty sure it was the quickest case ever, but while she was feeling bad I was so scared of dehydration that I basically gave her a lot of treats like ice cream, pediasure (she thinks it’s chocolate milk which it basically is), watered down juice, frozen yogurt tubes, etc

I’d try to make sure the electrolytes were okay. My kids when sick will only eat like plain rice, French fries (preferrrably McDonald’s), and white Gatorade (it’s called Glacier Cherry and we get it because my kids won’t drink Pedialyte, it’s cheaper, and it doesn’t have any frightening colors). They also get anything they possibly want to eat - my eldest has always been lower on weight and if he’s slightly sick or off he won’t eat, so no rules. Sugary cereal, Haagen Daas, juice, whatever.

@Mrs. Turtle: We are at about the same timeline. Dd started with coughing for a day or two then fever for about 3 days. One night of gagging/nausea, but it may have been from the meds I gave her before bed (the dr said to try benadryl or pediasure, and I only had benadryl..) She's still coughing and a little congested but mostly over it. Ds caught it by Wednesday/Thursday, fever started Thursday night, appetite hasn't been there, puked last night but only I think because he was choking as we were trying to give him motrin. Both kids fever 102ish, high 102s for dd. I've been running in the 100 range, up to 101 at its highest so far, coughing/some runny nose. Dd was tested at urgent care and actually negative for flu. So anyway yeah I'd say you're still in normal range, typical symptoms or a respiratory virus. We are also up a lot at night which sucks because our third baby could be here anytime. :(

same thing happened to my toddler when he got norovirus, and most recently when he had a bad col that also involved vomiting probably due to too much mucus.

My oldest was ftt, refused foods, etc. He got the flu when he was 3 and it took a long time for him to really kick it. Fever for like 4-5 days (although they said he didn't have a fever when we took him in but he did on our thermometer). I was also really worried about the eating and the doctor said to just worry about fluids. When his appetite finally returned he ate like he had never eaten before. I doubt a doctor will give an appetite stimulant for an illness like that but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.

It sounds normal, but DD can get like that with bad respiratory illnesses. It was especially bad when she had the flu. It's also scary because she'd get more and more lethargic, and it didn't seem like she'd have the energy to get better on her own. The doctor prescribed cyproheptadine and she started eating.

@petitenoisette: Thanks. Yeah I'll call in the am and tell them she's sick. She just fell asleep for her third nap of the day. So hard to watch her like this. We did get her to eat a little bit of instant oatmeal with cream and a few blueberries in between naps. Using tv to zone her out helped.

This sounds normal to me for recovering from a pretty rough illness. My little one had a virus this summer (she was about 28 months at the time) and was just super wiped for a week, didn’t eat much at all and slept constantly. We brought her to the dr several times but there wasn’t much to do but wait it out. She did drink a ton of water though so that was reassuring. She just needed time to recover and get her appetite back. I u derstand being concerned bc this all did freak me out too and we didn’t have a prior history with food. So hard to watch them be so sick but I hope she turns a corner soon.

I don’t know if you have specific protocol to follow regarding dr’s visits but I’d probably call beforehand and see if they want you to reschedule your well visit since she’s sick! Or reclassify it as a sick visit beforehand.

@Mrs. Turtle: I’m typically overly cautious but I’d be a little worried too. Especially with her history. I wouldn’t call or anything but I would have if you didn’t have an appointment.

@Littlebit7: In CA foster kiddos have medi cal so no worries there, but thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately I've tried all of the foods and she's refusing everything, so can't really sneak any protein in. I did get her to drink a bit of smoothie this morning with yogurt, peanut butter and ice cream all added in! When she wakes up from her nap I'm going to try again. I think she's probably fine and just taking a bit to recover (we all had it and no one feels 100% yet), but after what we went through with her as a baby it is so scary to see her like this.

@Mrs. Turtle: yeah i understand. Again I take it back to how I feel....I don't feel 100% after a cold for a week...its tough on their little bodies. maybe boost the vitamin C, add a probiotic, try to get some protein in her (I did the barilla protein plus pasta last night). If she's not eating much then I wouldn't be surprised if her energy levels are low! Maybe some smoothies or a yogurt drink?

(oh and this is random but I had the same thing happen...if you bring up her illness tomorrow at the well visit don't be surprised if you get billed for a sick visit. I don't know how your pedi is but mine snuck that in there last time something like that happened. not the end of the world but good to know.

My daughter has had a low grade fever since Tuesday and on sat it spiked to 104. She tested positive for strep and neg for flu. If your LO has true flu, I mean it's really rough, not just a 24 hour thing. Normally it's several days. I always try to compare it to an adult experience and then multiply that. So I'd have my primary goals be mainly hydration. The appetite will come back, albeit slowly. Offer random stuff until you find something that works.

All 3 of us have had what seems to be the flu this week. O's appetite wasn't great Wednesday, vomited a few times Thursday morning and had a slight fever, then no more vomiting but decreased appetite, fever, cough, congestion, etc. since then. Fever stopped Friday night, yesterday she was a bit better but still pretty wiped out and not eating much.

I'm trying to figure out if this is just par for the course recovery or if I need to worry. This morning she woke up bright and early and seemed normal, but then refused almost all of her breakfast and got really fussy, and is down napping already. It's 8 am. Normally if she naps at all it isn't until 1 pm. (she's 25 months)

I'm worried that because she's not eating much at all, her energy level is really low and she isn't snapping back like she should be. FYI, she has a history of refusing food and failure to thrive, among other medical issues which have been resolved. She's been eating great and gaining weight for a long time now, but this behavior makes me nervous. Is this normal toddler recovery? We have a well child (haha) visit tomorrow anyway, so I'm going to ask about appetite stimulants and everything then.
