It's a great small zoo and is very accessible. Also, there is a really nice bike/walking path around the South Mountain Reservation in South Orange. Nice views of the skyline on a clear day and good for a stroll. They have a little train that zips around the park that kids love. Check the dates but I'm pretty sure it's still going on. Also, we haven't been yet but I hear great things about the Turtleback Zoo. Or if you want to venture north a bit, the Bergen County Zoo at Van Saun Park in Paramus is so great for that age - small but perfect and has a train that goes through the zoo.
