One of my close friends was induced due to low amniotic fluid and had a beautiful birth in a birthing tub, no meds other than the pitocin that got things going.

I was induced because of heavy meconium and had no epi. Well I asked for an epi but it failed! It was tough! <--- understatement of the year ;D

I know two moms who had inductions and were still able to have a natural, vaginal birth! No other comment or suggestion, I hope you can make the right decision for you and be supported in it :)

Long story short, you get to make the choice, and it's your birth.

I had a medically needed induction, and I hated it. It was 1000 times more awful than having to run around and be surprised by labor starting. I'd have killed for the chance to go into labor on my own. Just sayin.

Personally, I would go back and read induction studies to reaffirm why I wanted natural... the increase in epidural need, operative delivery, and 40+% increased risk of cesarean. I'd also find another doctor but that's just me (last time I stayed with a doctor that offered me an elective induction I ended up with a VERY unnatural birth with unnecessary cesarean).

If you know all the risks and weigh your options and induction is still the best for you then go ahead... You could even try a foley bulb or sweep, and then a cervical softener (NOT cytotec), and then if you absolutely have to pitocin, just enough to start contractions, and then you can resume natural methods to help labor progression (walking, nipple stimulation, kissing etc)

If you still want a natural birth then make that very clear to your doctor (since they're not very supportive at this point offering induction) and stick with natural.

In the end as long as you make an informed decision, only you can decide what's best for you.

Just remind yourself that all that matters is that your baby gets here safely.

Your husband ain't the one pushing it out, he can get on board and be supportive or stfu.

You can still be pro-natural birth and realize it's not as appealing of an option as it used to seem :)

I used to be pretty judgey about non-medical inductions, but when my doctor offered to induce me at 39 weeks, 3 days with #2, I seriously considered it. I ended up going into labor at exactly 39 weeks, so I didn't do the induction after all, but I was grateful that it was an option.

When you get closer, maybe you can talk with your doctor more in depth about your induction options. You might be able to start with more natural/non-medicinal methods, if you're a good candidate for induction. And that might help get your DH more on board, too, if he's not too keen on it right now.

@septca: I know my post was a complete ramble. I am so worried that for some reason or another we won't be able to get ahold of the family that is supposed to care for DS. We do not have any back up family or friends to care for him. It's really stressing me out. We also have 2 other kids but they are older so if for some reason we can't get ahold of MIL they can always just sit in the waiting room until we can but DS can't so I'm really concerned about making sure he is taken care of when I am in labor.

I guess I don't really understand your reasoning for wanting an induction at 39 weeks. My research tells me that your chances of having an epidural is greatly increased with an induction/pitocin, so I guess you just need to decide which is more important to you and go from there.

As far as your husband goes: No uterus, no opinion (or very little).

This pregnancy I have been SO pro natural childbirth. I have done tons and tons of research watched many documentaries. Now that I am 5w2d from DD and my OB is more then willing to set an induction date when I see her for my 39w apt I'm starting to feel alot less confident in my natural labor choice. I still really do not want an Epi because I didn't like it when I was in labor with DS BUT I am all for getting induced after 39 weeks if I am not already in labor. I guess in the grand scheme of things being induced would be so much easier then spontanious labor. We could have a plan for our other kids already in place instead of rushing around making sure everyone the is supposed to be watching them actually answers there phones. It just seems like the predictability of induction might work better. DH is so pro natural birth but I really think I am going to speak to my OB at my next apt about scheduling an induction after 39 weeks. I just needed to get that off my chest no one in my life understands since everyone is SO pro natural birth and anti induction.
