@BelugaBean: how scary! I'm glad she's ok. My LO does the same bolding breath thing when he cries super hard. He's never gone limp before though.

BelugaBean - How scary! I have a friend who's DS does this when he is upset/injured. It happens quite often to him but I think his Ped said it's something he will grow out of.

They said she had a pallid breath-holding spell. And that she's now more prone to getting them in the future. Either pain or fear caused her to stop breathing and then pass out. He said if they become more frequent or seem to have no trigger then they would refer her to a neurologist to make sure she isn't having seizures but that she seems fine and that they're sure that's all it was.

And there's nothing that I can really do besides hold her and make sure she isn't holding her breath for too long.

I babysat for a little girl who did this, and she was around the same age. She did it maybe 3-4 times, and I was there when it happened. She had slipped in the tub, but we were right there and nothing happened. Still, it startled her. She started to cry, then it turned to not making any noise, but just having her mouth wide open, and then her eyes rolled back and she was about to pass out. Scary.

Her mom talked to the ped who said this was not uncommon.

@Mrsbells: She'll be 13 months on Sunday.

It's hard not to Google things. It sounds like pallid breath holding spell though. She could have been unconscious when I got to her and woken up when I picked her up. She was definitely limp when I got there but she was face down in the fetal position so her face had time to look like she was crying by the time I picked her up.

@lemondrop: I have actually heard that before. She has a bit of red in her brown hair.

She has done it to a lesser degree before but never like this.

Thanks for responding everyone, I'm still shaken up 2.5 hours later. I'm not sure if they'll be able to tell me why it happened at the doctor but I hope they can.

Is she a red head? My brother used to do that, really bad. The pediatrician told my mom that it happens a lot with red heads, but that was 25+ years ago, so I'm not really sure of the accuracy of that statement.

I've noticed my son does it to a much lesser degree. Once I blow in his face he usually takes a deep breath. I'll be interested to hear your update, good luck at your appointment.

That sounds so scary! I was told when my LO does this to tap the bottom of her foot. I don't know why, but it works. My cousin's child frequently holds his breath until he passes out when he cries. He started as a very little baby. It's super weird, but their ped said that it happens to some kids. They just can't cope with the pain/frustration/etc.

@BabyBoecksMom: Her face was as if she was crying like it always is. So her face muscles were tightened but she was completely limp otherwise. I noticed because I went to pick her up and she wasn't resisting but she felt a lot heavier and harder to pick up.

So LO has had episodes where she doesn't breathe for just a few seconds when she's crying (mainly when she gets her shots). Today was different.

I went to turn the oven on to make lunch and I heard her fall (I heard her hands hit the floor and her whimper). When I got to her, she was doing the same thing, where she's crying but not yet breathing/making noise. But when I went to pick her up, I noticed she was limp and the not breathing lasted a lot longer. I couldn't find my phone or her pacifier so I ran outside to get her fresh air and to be out there in case I needed help.

She came down from being upset and was fine. She was very tired but she ate almost all of her lunch and was giggly afterward. She's asleep now but she has an appointment at 3:40 because they want to see her.

I've never been that scared before. My heart was in my stomach and I couldn't think at all besides to get her to breathe. It sounds like the limpness was what is concerning the doctors. I'll update when we get back, I just needed to share. It happened over an hour ago and I'm still shaking.
