@brownie: a pound a month is great! Glad to hear your lo is putting on weight :) I agree that commenting how healthy a child looks is better than remarking on their weight.

@MungBean: my son is 18 months old and is still solidly in 9-12 month clothes. He just hit 20 pounds. I swear that all I think about is food: what and when I'm eating, when I'll feed him, etc. I never thought I would be that obsessed.

He is growing well now at almost a pound a month (with mostly breastmilk and solids). I look at babies now and try to tell the parents how healthy they look. It is so much easier than big or little.

@brownie: That's good to know! Seriously, feeding is so stressful - especially when you have a smaller baby. I know I shouldn't let peoples' comments bug me, but I get so annoyed when everyone and their mamas remarks on how tiny she is. Ugh.

We never did baby cereal and he had an iron test at 11 months old and there were no problems.

Good to know that your ped wasn't too worried about it.

@irene: @caffeinated: The ped wasn't very worried about her iron intake when I brought it up. I give L iron fortified oatmeal or multigrain cereal everyday with fruit puree (she'll usually eat 3 TB daily), and like @Arden said, I've been giving her greens that are iron rich like spinach, kale, and broccoli.

I didn't feed my baby cereal, and she was fine. Just make sure you get enough in your diet.

If she's only 6.5 months and still breastfeeding, wouldn't she be getting most of her nutrients through your breast milk anyway?

I would think that if you had enough iron in your own diet, she would get enough through you.

Also, there are plenty of veggies that are high in iron. Spinach, lima beans, potatoes, peas, pumpkin, tomatoes, cherries, greens, beets, mushrooms...
Beans, lentils, and chickpeas have super high levels as well.

@MungBean: i just saw this post...i am curious what you ended up doing? I would have suggested beets since those are veggies high in iron.

LO is 6.5 months old now and absolutely hates baby rice cereal, oatmeal, etc. She's breast fed and isn't eating meat yet, so I'm worried that she's not getting enough iron. I'm probably going to call the pediatrician in the next couple days, but wanted to know if anyone else has a baby that won't eat iron-fortified infant cereal? If so, how did you make sure s/he got enough iron?
