That's definitely a bummer. But... It is really encouraging that your doctor is already looking at your cycles and trying to be proactive about it. I know that a lot of doctors would just flat out refuse to send you for any follow-up until you have been trying for a year. Good luck, and I hope you get some positive news from your bloodwork!

I'd just like to chime in in support of charting. My cycles were getting crazy - 50, 57 and 60 days. The only thing my doctors would tell me was that if my cycles were over 35 days, I probably wasn't O'ing. Also, after a year of trying they would send me to a specialist.

Well, I started SERIOUSLY charting, and by paying close attention to my CM, CP and BBT, we figured out that I was ovulating, just really late. I'm now 7 weeks pregnant, praying that this little one sticks around!

@SSLM - your story sounds EXACTLY like mine! My cycles were around 28-30 days after coming off BC, but then they got longer and longer (one was 60 and one was 69). At my annual I talked to my Gyn and she suggested the same thing your doc did - bloodwork and she suggested Clomid. That was around our 7th cycle trying. She said that I wasn't ovulating either.

I had already read TCOYF and I re-read it. Also I decided to start charting. I also wanted to get a hold of things and feel in control. I started seeing an Accupuncturist and almost immediately my cycles went down to 35 days. I also started using an Ovulation Monitor to help me know when I ovulated. These things have helped me so much. Unfortunately we are still not pregnant, but I just finished my 2nd round of clomid and am hoping for a BFP this cycle.

At the end of the day, no one cares about you getting pregnant more than you. You have to take charge of the information from your GYN, but you should also research and be ready to ask questions. You have to be your own advocate on this journey, while your GYN is helpful... make sure you reasearch and get 2nd opinions.

Good luck to you!!!

So sorry to hear about your bad news! I have a friend who had the same issue, she wasn't ovulating and her doctor got her on some good drugs so now she has an adorable 3 month old baby girl. At least you are realizing there's a problem so you'll be able to fix it. Good luck!

@duckduckkristen: I understand, I have read a lot about charting and have seriously thought about starting. I guess I feel like I am just not ready for that yet... I realize that sounds insane because we're talking about Clomid, etc. Maybe I will give it some more thought :) Thanks.

And just to defend my doctor, she said it wouldn't do me a lot of good wrt TTC, because if I'm ovulating it's all over the map and it only confirms that you ovulated after the fact. She seemed to know at least as much as I do about it... I trust her completely!

@sslm: Not to totally dis the medical community (my husband is a doctor), but doctors don't learn about charting in med school or residency. Some may know the basics of how it works, but don't realize how many problems can easily be figured out by using it (short luteal phase, low progesterone, thyroid issues, etc.). My husband had absolutely no idea how it worked when we started trying.

Anyways, if you are having a 58 day cycle, you wouldn't be ovulating until day 40-something, so if they only test your levels on day 3 and 24, they will tell you aren't ovulating, even if you really are, just late. The chances of having a period without ovulation are pretty slim. I would at least have them check your levels again sometime after 24 days. If you want to be 100% sure whether or not you are ovulating, charting is the best way.

Hopefully everything is fine with you, but I hate to see people go through unnecessary interventions when TTCing. :) My husband does them on perfectly healthy women on a daily basis (because their OBs recommend it, not him).

@MrsLilybugg: That's great about your friend! Thanks for sharing, that makes me feel better :)

@GreenThumb: I am so glad I have a doctor that's willing to be proactive, especially SO early in the process.

@Rescuemom10: Thanks! I'm glad to have someone to talk to about this, right now it's just my DH, since we're not telling anyone we're TTC.

@winniebee: Thanks for the support. I have been following your story on WB, I am so happy you're pregnant!! Congrats :)

@duckduckkristen: Well, I asked her about charting and she said it probably wouldn't do me much good. They're trying to determine ovulation by bloodwork, so I think I'll wait and see how that goes first. I haven't been feeling stressed, we only just started trying, so I'm pretty sure that's not it, but I am looking into some yoga classes and massages too. Couldn't hurt, right? :)

Sorry that it was not a good appt! If it makes you feel any better my cycles after coming off the pill were 35 days, 31 days, 45 days (pregnant but miscarried), 40 days, 34, 31, then 28. I do think it takes many women at least 6 months to regulate after going off the pill and I hope that's you!

Even though it might not have been the news you wanted to hear, it is good news that you can work on figuring things out and decide how to move forward. Being proactive seems like a great approach! I know it is tough not knowing what is going on, but at least you are taking control by getting things checked out and having your Dr. on board. I'm sure you'll get it all taken care of!

That sounds a lot like my cycles in the year before my wedding. I was also concerned that I wasn't ovulating (We wanted to TTC right after the wedding) so I read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Tony Weschler and starting charting. Through charting I discovered that I was in fact ovulating, just very late, probably due to the stress of planning a wedding.

TTCing can be VERY stressful, which can cause delayed ovulation/long cycles, so before you try any fertility treatments, I would definitely recommend charting for a few cycles.

Good Luck!

Aww, that sounds like a rough appointment :( My best friend had issues with ovulation, and she had treatments ( a few rounds of Clomid), and now has two beautiful sons. I know it seems dark and scary right now, and I am in a similar same dark and scary boat too, but I am sure that everything will be OK. Hugs.

Well. Since coming off the pill in July I've had cycles that were 36, 46, 46, and 58 days. I went to the doctor just to see what she thought. I was expecting it to be a "well you're just coming off the pill so give it time" but instead it was a "yeah that isn't normal". She thinks I'm not ovulating. She's sending me for 3 and 24 day bloodwork to check horomone levels and then we'll go from there. She said to keep BD'ing every 2nd day just in case, and that she'd send me to a fertility specialist if we have no luck after 6 months.

I'm sad and scared!! I know it's possible it could be a simple fix (she mentioned clomid) but it's still scary to think we might have problems getting pregnant. Just looking for support.
