I agree with the PP's. You need to say something.

Just mention it casually and move on, but do it the first day.

Thanks everyone for your responses! You have given us a lot to think about, and what you are saying makes a lot of sense - my first instinct was that I should probably say something so she knows it's not because we don't trust her, so I think I will just go with that instinct and mention it to her in passing so it doesn't become a big deal.

@MrsCB: I agree 100%. I would be very unhappy if I found out I was being video'd without my knowledge. And my understanding is if there's sound it's actually illegal not to tell her.

I agree that you should mention it. Even if for no other reason than maybe she doesn't sit politely while wearing a skirt or in case your lo vomits all over her top etc. I would not be worried at all if a family I work for installed cameras and told me but I would quit, no questions asked, if I found out they were taping me without my knowledge.

As a former nanny, please just casually mention them. It's not a huge deal, lots of people have them, but it's just the right thing to do to let her know.

Definitely mention it. Your nanny probably won't even blink an eye about it.

No offense, but I think it's kind of unethical to not let someone know they're being video'd.

Mention it in causal passing. Like when you give her your usual talk before you leave. LO did this, had that, oh btw we installed some cameras. Don't be surprised or take it personal, we love your work, we had been planning on doing this long before you came on but just now had them installed. Then move on to other small talk.

Part of me feels like the whole point of a nanny cam is to make sure she is doing her job. It almost defeats the purpose of the cams if you point out where they are... at the same time it would keep her accountable. I dunno... I guess I am not much help.

Just a side note. I had a friend who adored her nanny but put up security cameras because their house had been broken into a couple times. In no way was she meaning to spy on her nanny... until she saw that her nanny was the one stealing stuff and ignoring her baby crying... something she did NOT expect to find. I know that is the expection to the rule but still, it certainly makes me lean toward not pointing them out...

We have a nanny cam and told her about it because it's in a very obvious place. We thought it would be weird to not mention it.

I would just casually mention them. Since they're obvious, it might be weird if you don't say something. Just tell her you like to be able to check in on LO while you're at work.

As a former nanny, I think because they are going to be obvious it could possibly be taken as a passive agressive move on your part. Like you're trying to say something to her without really saying it. Since you said you love her, I don't think that is the case. But not talking about your reasons for installing them could be misinterpreted, in a negative way.

Personally, if my former employer did this I would be offended. Not because of the cameras but because of the lack of communication.

Just my personal opinion though!

Yep I nannied in college and I'd have been so weirded out if I saw cameras but the parents never mentioned them. I would just point them out and not make a big deal out of it.

Hmm...I think if they are that obvious then maybe explaining why they weren't there but now are would ease her mind. I was a nanny for several years and if there were nanny cams (that I could obviously see) and the parents didn't casually bring it up, like it was no big deal, I'd feel even more weird.

Our nanny just started and we love her. We're putting up nanny cams this weekend in our living room and LO's nursery so we can see LO while we're at work, and just to make sure everything is generally okay (they're Foscams, so will be very obvious, not anything hidden).

I was wondering if people who have put up cameras have not told the nanny they were there. They will be (very) visible, but I'm leaning toward not sitting her down and explaining that we put them up and why we put them up. My mother thinks we definitely shouldn't explicitly point them out. Has anyone gone this route? It seems like many people have told their nanny outright that they have installed cameras.
