Another vote to start taking them now. I started taking them in December or January I think.... which was about 4 or 5 months before we started TTC. I either took a regular multi with a folic acid supplement or just bought a new brand of prenatals whenever I ran out, but since I've been pregnant, the only combination that works is the naturemade prenatal (without DHA) and a strawberry-flavored omega-3/DHA supplement by Nordic Naturals. For some reason the multi-vitamins that already have DHA in them make me sooooo sick now. I really don't think the brand matters much especially before you're pregnant. Folic Acid is the important ingredient, because the best-case scenario is that it would already be in your system by the time conception occurs.

I did this with my first since I have a history of anemia and low levels in general. We are planning to NTNP/TTC starting late next month/early October probably so I'm going back on the prenatals to make sure my levels are good.

Hi everyone.

I talked to the pharmacist and they recommended Centrum or Jameson. I opted for Centrum prenatal + DHA. So that's two pills daily.

It says to take it with a meal, but which meal do you prefer to take it with?

I eat a healthy diet and still started with the prenatals the moment I went of BC. My dr. advised it to 'stockpile' the nutrients. I got some Naturemade ones off of Amazon. I was taking mine first thing in the morning but they made me nauseous so I switched to taking them after I had breakfast. We're going to start actively trying in a month or so.

Like @blackbird: I take the gummy prenatal vitamins because I don't need the iron. I usually take the Vitafusion ones or the Target brand.

If you don't want to take them, you can add folic acid to your diet by eating a few Brazil nuts each day.

I think all women of childbearing age should take folic acid or a prenatal! It can never hurt :) that being said, I take that and also take fish oil. I also take a prescription folic acid because my body doesn't absorb it like it should. They're all kind of the same...just pick one and as long as you take it, it's good. I take the gummy because I don't want the iron (i eat plenty of iron rich foods and iron constipates me, so...no iron for me personally)

There's a grocery store in my area that does free prescription prenatals. So i called my doctors office and asked them for a prescription (they were fine giving it over the phone, so you probably don't need a separate appointment) and now i get my prenatals for free. They are two pills, one prenatal and one DHA liquid pill. I think it's worth looking into programs like that. Some only do your FIRST prescription (30 days or so) for free, so I went with the one that doesn't limit it even though it's not my normal grocery store

I've been taking a prenatal multivitamin for almost 10 years. My doctor recommends that anyone who's of child bearing age and sexually active takes them. I would take a multivitamin anyway, and they just have added folic acid, which doesn't hurt anything.
