I went to Nova Scotia in 2012. Halifax and Lunenberg are lots of fun. Cape Breton Island is beautiful, but if I were to do it again, I’d see if I could camp (not sure how I’d get my camping equipment up there etc). Everything seemed to close by 7 PM (was hard to find a restaurant), even in Baddeck, which I found quite touristy. It would have been nice to have a campfire to hang out by in the evenings.

@josesmama: I'll have to look up that whale watching tour! There's so many that it's hard to know where to start!

@Charm54: This information is great! I'm sure my kids would love the book shop, I'll have to look it up! I had seen more information on Mahone Bay lately and thought about stopping either on our way to or on our way back from Lunenburg. We're staying just north of Peggys Cove so we'll definitely head over that way as well. I'm open to any information!

We wanted to visit the Hopewell Rocks for our Bay of Fundy trip but it's just too far so we'll be doing Burntcoat, which still looks gorgeous!

This is my neck of the woods

Halifax is a great spot and so much fun. I love the boardwalk area and market. The Discovery Centre is great for kids. There’s lots of local shopping and restaurants in the downtown core. The new library is beautiful and worth a look!

Outside of Halifax, definitely Peggy’s Cove and Lunenburg. My favourite place might be Mahone Bay - it is a spectacular little town that is so vibrant and colourful.

Everyone raves about the new “book shop and dreamery” called Mable Murple’s in River John that was opened by one of our region’s most famous children’s authors. I haven’t been yet but it is on my bucket list for next year because it gets so many great reviews. It would only be a slight detour on your way to Cape Breton. I haven’t been to Cape Breton in a while, but it is a gorgeous spot with the Cabot trail and cliffs.

If you have any more questions let me know!

Hi! I was just in Nova Scotia with my 11 year old son for a week in early July! We loved it!! We did the Brier Island whale watching tour off of Digby Neck. It was fantastic! We saw 4 whales! Peggy's Cove was so beautiful to see in real life too. We mostly spent our time on the South Shore with friends of ours so I didn't see most of the places you mentioned.

With kids (6 and 3)! Any recommendations are welcome! It's for next June, if that helps. We're planning five nights nearish to Peggys Cove and hope to explore Lunenburg, Burntcoat Head Park, and Halifax and then plan to go up to the Cheticamp area for three more nights and hope to explore Baddeck, Iona, and Inverness.

Any other must sees? Best whale watching tours? Restaurants? Places to park and sightsee on the Cabot Trail up in Cape Breton Highlands National Park maybe? I'll have both kids with me and my mom who isn't great at having to walk too far so I don't want to do a full on hike but would love good spots to stop and enjoy the view/take a small walk.
