@miss-spunkin: My LO also wore newborn for about a month but I've had several friends who delivered 9+ lb babies and then had to rush out and buy diapers because the newborn diapers just weren't going to work. I usually buy size 1 or size 1-2 although I have been known to buy bigger sizes if on the registry.

I don't gift clothing and I don't gift anything that I can't or won't provide a gift receipt for. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate any kind of gift, but sometimes, people buy things that are totally impractical and take off the tags, so I can't even return it. It's a waste for everyone.

My favorite gift is cash, both to give and receive.

I will stick to registries for the most part. I would avoid books and anything that isn't able to be returned easily.

The exception would be blankets. My SIL made me three double layer huge flannel blankets that WE LOVE! In the summer we love the Aiden and Anais blankets. I'd also be willing to go out on a limb and get premium prefolds for burp cloths because they are far superior to the Gerber ones we had initially.

I also ask if they have any interest in.cloth diapering and offer to show them our dipes so they can see they are easy and cute. I wouldn't buy any unless the mom wanted to try them though.

@Sweet T: I agree with you there. When I do get clothes, it's usually sizes 6 mos+, and it's supplemental to something else.

I guess it may depend how close I am to the person too, if I tell them "this was a lifesaver for me!" they'll probably be really excited about it too.

@eeh: Good point! Always include a gift receipt. I ended up with several things I didn't want/need/like and noway to return it. I actually had one person buy me really ugly baby clothes hahaha. But she had removed the tags and there was no gift receipt so I'm stuck with them lol

I always get something off of the registry. Depending on how much I spend, I might get something else too. I like to get practical things because a lot of people don't get those things. I was really frustrated after my shower. Of course, I'm grateful that we got anything at all but we got so many outfits that DS never wore. We didn't get any diapers or wipes. I try to save new moms from that frustration by getting what they obviously need.

As someone who's not a mom yet (due in August) I would really appreciate someone getting me something they found incredibly useful with their baby. I find the whole registry process daunting because I just don't know what works, what I need, etc.

That being said...it would be a bonus if whatever they get me is something I can easily return in case I get multiples or it's something I've done a lot of research on an choose not to use for whatever reason.

I usually like to give something personalized or handmade, along with something on the registry. I love my personalized things for my LO, but I know how important the practical things are.

I don't have a go to thing that I give, it usually depends on the person. Sometimes I make a diaper cake and decorate it with things off their registry.

@regberadaisy: OOOH YES!!! Either the nose freida of or the baby comfy nose, both available on amazon.
The bulb hardly works at all.. really. I got the little nose saline drops then suction it out with the freida and it works like a charm. LO hates it, the poor dear, but it works great.

I'm not a mom yet...but I think I will still buy off the registry. I figure to assume they did their research. Just because I Like something doesn't mean they will. But I might add a small item that I like and think they would too.

I Need to check out this "nose frieda" now!
ETA: @chopsuey119: @miss-spunkin: My childbirth instructor recommended this over a ball sucker. Is it really that much better?

After I got married, the only thing I gave at weddings were sheets and towels. It's really the first thing you need in the new place!

Now I just give cash. :)

As for baby showers, now that I'm a mom, I usually get a jj cole diaper caddy and fill it with diapers, wipes, triple paste, infant tylenol, mylicon, etc. and a gift card to whatever baby store is closest to the couple.

@Navy_Mommy: really?! that's so weird. I was super blessed that I got the majority of the stuff on my registry. Hardly anyone got us clothes, I actually had to go out and buy a bunch of clothes cause he didn't have any.

Now that I've had a baby I'm actually gonna be more careful to follow registries.

I got so many cutesie outfits that DS will probably only wear once and barely any of the practical stuff off my registry. It was obnoxious, in all honesty. Only one person in DH's family got us something off our registry, everyone else got random stuff like a set of coins that were minted in 2012. I don't even know what to do with the coins, lol.

does that change what you give as gifts at baby showers? Or do you still just follow their registry?

I have come to love a few specific items that I think every mom should have, or I have read a few books that have made life so much easier. I want to give these items moreso, especially if it's a first time mom, because now that I have one I know what works/doesn't work.

My favorite items thus far:
- Aden & Anais swaddle blankets
- Natursutten pacifier
- The Baby Book by Dr. Sears
- The No-Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley
- Snoedel (I don't have one, but the concept is great)
- Summer Infant Swaddle Sacks
- Nose freida
- Dr. Browns Glass bottles

What have been your absolute favorites? Did you buy them for friends?
