@junebugmama: You're definitely not being a downer, I guess the more I think about it the odds just seem to arbitrary that they don't really seem helpful. I am so glad that your US results were inaccurate and that all was well...scary that that can happen and cause all that fear for nothing!

@littlek: I am so glad to hear your LO was healthy! Did they explain what in your bloodwork gave such high odds?

@LemonLong: Thanks, I will look into that--do you know if there is a time frame within which that test has to be taken? I will ask my dr. on Friday when I am in. Glad all turned out well!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Now I wish we had as well!

@hummusgirl: thank you so much, i will certainly let you know if we do--that would b very helpful.

@Andrea: i will definitely be looking into it! thank you.

@blackbird: really glad that you are working with your doctor's to give your baby the best care for the possible heart condition. after reading your experience, it makes me feel better having done the testing in case there IS something we need to be preparing for now. good luck with everything,

My odds were 1:57 for downs. I forgot to mention that in my post. LO is now 6 months old and perfectly healthy!

My odds were 1/24 for Downs and 1/50 for Tri 18, plus my bloodwork showed Turners possibility (which is not testable with MaterniT21), so I opted for the CVS and everything came back normal. Our baby just has a fat neck and I have funky bloodwork.

BUT the bloodwork is *still* indicative of a possible heart defect. I'm continuing to get ultrasounds and a fetal echocardiogram to rule out the possibility that she has a heart defect. If anything is wrong, I most certainly want it diagnosed and I want the right specialists on hand at the birth to do the surgery. Sometimes, there's more to it than just the big chromosomal issues they are looking for--sometimes the bloodwork is indicative of other potential issues.

Look at it this way: 1/676 chance translates to 0.15%. That's incredibly low. Your chances of having a baby with handicap issues is about 2%, so your chances of Downs and Tri18 are still lower than that.

Yet another reason we didn't do the NT scan...

We also had a soft marker at our anatomy scan and I took the MaterniT21 blood test after having inconclusive follow up ultrasounds. It gave me peace of mind so maybe you can consider it.

My NT results were normal but we had a couple "soft markers" for Down Syndrome on our anatomy ultrasound. I didn't want the risk of the amnio (however small) so I did the MaterniT21 blood test. I think our insurance covered a lot of it and we paid about $250 out of pocket. My son didn't end up having DS but I did come across some fantastic resources for parents and expectant parents whose kids do which I'd be happy to share if you need it.

I was 29 and my tests came back with a 1 in 35 chance. We opted for the MaternT21 test which confirmed our daughter did not have any trisomnal abnormalities. It was just a non-invasive blood test. Maybe ask your doctor about it? It's pretty new.

@maybebaby: The thing to remember is someone always has to be the "1" :/

I'm not trying to be a downer. I'm just being realistic. I had an ultrasound that came back with amazingly negative news(whole in bowel, cleft pallet, along with a few other concerns). I ended up having a perfectly healthy baby boy. You really just never know.

@junebugmama: Thank you for sharing. With results like that it makes me wonder how valuable the bloodwork even is. Now I almost wish I hadn't had it at all!

My sisters 2nd pregnancy was 1 in 192. She opted to not have an amnio. She did however receive more ultrasounds and saw specialists. I have 2 friends with daughters who have DS. One of them had stats of 1 in 876 and the other as 1 in 7500.

You're always at risk regardless of the stats. Worrying is normal, but that's what motherhood is all about.

@adnama: @littlek: Thanks, both. I know worrying will do no good, but I wouldn't mind additional u/s to monitor progress. I have an appointment Friday, so hopefully can get some answers.

I ended up with wonky bloodwork as well. We opted for CSV and the test results came back that we had a normal baby and my odds were much worse than yours. If you don't plan on doing CSV or amino you will probably have additional ultrasounds to monitor the baby. Like previous poster said there is 99.9% chance you have a perfectly healthy baby.

On the positive side, there is a 99.9% chance your babe does not have DS. Hoping the OB can answer more questions for you!

We got our NT results back. The US looked good with present nasal bone and 2 mm nuchal fold. The bloodwork came back and I was informed by a nurse over the phone-- 1 in 18,000 for trisomy 18 and 1 in 676 for Down Syndrome--wait, what? 1 in 676? Most other people my age (27) seem to have 1 in 10,000 + ratings...where did this 1 in 676 come from? Obviously I need to discuss the results with my OB, but has anyone experienced a similar probability? We do not want further testing and will keep and love this baby with any outcome, I just was expecting (perhaps stupidly) a much lower probability. I know it is still low and the chances of an abnormality are, well, 1 in 676...but I am still a bit rattled.
