@tysonja: Even the smallest amounts of breast milk are beneficial for baby. Either way, either breast or formula your feeding your baby and that's what's important.
I also just learned about a vicious cycle my body has been going through. I have graves disease and that medication I have to take cause's hypothyroid. Having a hypothyroid produces less progesterone causing me to have a monthly visitor, which in turn also causes my milk supply to dry up a bit that week since your body needs progesterone to make milk. Its crazy but I've made it 4 months and I know there is milk there so I'm gonna do whatever I can to give my DD it. I did at one point have to supplement 2oz of formula here and there until I got Domperidone going. I really hate how we are made to feel like failures or even guilty because we have to give our babies formula. For most women a better support system would of meant more knowledge and better success. Women are out there trying their A$$'s off and giving up or drying up left and right with nowhere to turn to. There really needs to be better access to personal resources from real people.

@MamaPhoenix: thanks for your reply! I'm in Canada too and lol I was told to take three pills four times a day -- my sil was told to take four pills four times a day! I guess our doctors are rebels?:) hehe

I will try again I think! I love nursing my baby too much to let my supply get too low again:)

@tysonja: I would try again. The Domperidone dose I was prescribed was off script. My doc and I actually had to agree to disagree about the dose. the FDA has pulled is endorsement of the medication because of some study's. The patients we're 70 somethings and ended up having heart attacks related to the drug. The reason they were on said medication was because it is usually used for a sluggish intestine. They also can use Domperidone for babies with acid reflex. Dr Jack Newman is a Doc from Toronto Ontario Canada who is an expert at breastfeeding. All our Lactation consultant from the la leche league get a lot of helpful info from him. The Dose is 30mg three time daily. It only comes in 10mg pills so you take 3 pills 3 times a day for a total of 9 pills. It sucks to take so many but it really really works. It has to be the right dose.

@MamaPhoenix: wow! just want to say that i am super impressed, a bit jealous, and encouraged, all at the same time :)

for both my LO's i was/am on blessed thistle, fenugreek, a high dosage of domperidone, nursing 8 times a day AND pumping 5-6 times a day and i would only get about 2 ounces in total of pumped milk. He wasn't getting much through nursing either, he would get a bottle of formula after each session as well....

i haven't pumped in a while now, but maybe i'll start again to try and up my supply!

I pump twice a day and produce between 10 and 12 oz. Right now, she only takes 9 oz. while at daycare, but I'm keeping it up since she will need more milk soon.

It's after, I also have to mention that my Doc had to put me on Domperiodone for a bit. I'm off now but it really helped kick it up. The Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle are keeping it going without the script.

While I EP'ed with my first I tried to maintain supply by pumping the same amount of time total. So if I had 4 sessions and pumped for 10 minutes each session, I would still maintain 40 minutes total pump time over the 3 pump sessions if I were to drop one.

You can also pump before you go to bed to add to your overall amount for the day.

I've had some crazy issues with my milk supply and started taking Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek. Both from the Natural Foods store. I've been pumping 10oz everytime. I pump about three times a day. I'm also still at home with LO. It might help to give it a try.

At my 8:40 pump i got 5oz (normally between 3.5-5 oz)
I pumped at 12:40 instead of 11 & 1:45 and i got just shy of 5 oz (normally 2-3 oz each session) and just now at 3:40 i pumped about 3oz...I think thats pretty good!

I rarely get more than 3 ounces a session so dropping pumps has always meant less milk for me. But I know it works for others so maybe give it a shot and see what happens? Like PP I added pumps before and after work as needed to keep up with LOs needs, and just keep three pumps at work.

Agree it totally depends on your body. I pump 5 times a day, but only 3 times at work, so once when I wake up and once before bed. You could always add a pump or two at home if you need to in order to help with work productivity.

I dropped a pump about a month ago and I pump about 5 oz less overall. It really just depends on your body.

I used to pump 2x per day and got 6-8 ounces. Now I pump once a day and get 5-7.5 ounces. So a little less, but not too much.

I got roughly the same number of ounces pumping 3x/day as I did when I droped to 2x/day, so I say give it a shot. 4x/day is a lot. I had the greatest production when I went 3-4 hours between pumping sessions.

It really depends on your body and what works for you! I would say you should give it a try and see how it goes! If you notice your supply dipping a little after a couple weeks, then you'll probably have to go back to four sessions, but it doesn't hurt to try it and see how it goes!

My baby is 4 1/2 months old and i went back to work 6 weeks ago. I've been pumping 4 times a day at 8:40, 11, 1:20, and 3:40 and I get about 12 ounces total. I'm wondering if i were to pump three times say at 8:40, 12:20, and 3:40 would I still produce the same amount of ounces? Its really hurting my productivity at work to stop and pump so many times but I really need closer to 14 ounces to send to daycare so i cant afford to let my supply slip. Thoughts?
