I lived in my glider for the first 3 months. I have a bad back from past car accidents and having a place to breastfeed her was so helpful. I tried breastfeeding her in the bed but it hurt my back so we went back to the glider. Even at 6 months, when we're home, she only gets breastfeed in the glider

@LuLu Mom: That's exactly what I'm afraid of happening! Especially since DH doesn't think it's really necessary and we really don't have room for it. I'm just afraid if we don't get one right away, we'll never get it and I'll always want one, but on the other hand, who knows if LO will really like it...

Maybe I should just borrow a rocking chair and see how we like that, then go from there...

We spend a pretty penny on our glider, it was our splurge for the nursery, we wanted a big, overstuffed chair glider. We have used it only a handful of times in 6 1/2 months, she doesn't like it! She's a cuddler not a rocker, sigh.

It's sounding like the first few months the glider gets used less, then? It would be nice if we could wait until LO is hear and kind of decide if we really want it or not, plus at that point, we could just get rid of the bed and put the glider in the nursery...

Even though I really just want it now.... :) I wish my "nesting" came in the form or organizing and cleaning, instead of thinking up new things to buy.

Necessary for us as well. I was big on making sure our bed stayed ours, so I never nursed LO in our bed in the beginning. I always did it in the glider. After 3 weeks, I started exclusively pumping, and I always did it in the glider or fed him in the glider. I don't know where we'd be without it!

I haven't had one, I've just used the sofa or my bed to feed LO (since she's in my room) LO is almost 7 months and I kinda, sorta want to get one for when she's in her room! Gotta convince dh first. And find some room for it. I know it will definitely get used while I continue bfeeding lo and will be used for the next baby. Also, the one I want can easily be put in the living room afterwards.

We didn't have one due to space issues. I mostly sat in an Ikea Poang chair or on the sofa or bed to nurse (although the sofa wasn't delivered until about a month after LO was born). The Poang was comfortable. I draped some blankets over the arms since they are not upholstered. We eventually got the rocking version of the Poang--it is just as comfortable, but it doesn't rock that well on carpet. It would be great on a wood floor with a low-pile rug.

I love our glider, but it's not a need. When we go on vacation I don't have a glider and we live without it. I just sit on a couch (or air mattress if we're camping) instead. I can rock LO without having a glider there to do it for me.

Thanks so much for all the opinions! Pretty much confirming what I thought, but wanted to check with people who have been there already to make a stronger argument to DH. Now I'm wondering if we should just get rid of the bed in the nursery and buy a smaller one, or wait and get the glider a months after LO is born (when all the first visits are done anyway).

Our nursery is only 9x9 and it is also our office and guest bedroom. We have a full sized murphy bed that can be pulled out in a pinch if guests visit and this rocker is a little more low profile and easy to move around so when we need to transform the room it will be easier. I know it isn't as comfortable as the tall upholstered chairs, but honestly we have nowhere to put one of those, not even in our master bedroom.

I have a glider and it was a necessity. We have a 2 story house and since I had a c/s, I could only go up the stairs a limited amount each day. Once upstairs, all DS's feedings were in the glider and it is sooo comfortable. At 9 months, he still gets half of his bottles in there.

I have a rocking chair and I love it. I definitely prefer to nurse there than anywhere else. I had Hubs bring it down from the nursery into the living room for now since Xander's not even sleeping in his nursery yet. Being able to prop the boppy on my lap AND the arms of the rocking chair to bring Xander up to the correct level is awesome! And gives my arms a little break. I love it!

A rocker/glider was on the top of my list of must haves for the nursery but after shopping around and looking at prices the style i liked just wasnt in our budget. I kept my eyes peeled on craigslist and found a used PBkids rocker for under $300 i nabbed it even though i'm only 15 weeks

We have a rocker/recliner, and I think that is more important than our crib! Haha, not really, but I LOVE it. It's not so much that DD needs the rocking motion, but it is sooo much more comfortable to use that than to bounce her around, or walk with her. We got one that we can move into our living room when we're done with babies, and I want to get another one so I can have one in the LR already!!

In the beginning (like the first 2-3 months) I never really used the glider. It was easier to nurse LO in bed or on the couch. But around 4 months, he became super distractible, so I had to go into his room, close the door, and nurse him in quiet. I guess I could have done that in my room/on our bed, but it was easier for me to properly position him while sitting up. The rocking part of the chair is nice, but not really necessary. So I don't know that a glider would be "necessary" for you right away. Now, at 6 months, I love it--he's in his own room, so I need somewhere in there I can sit and nurse him at night/before bed. When we're home, I nurse him in the glider 99% of the time. Also the one we got doesn't scream" nursery glider" so we could easily transition it to a different room after we're done with babie.s

Not sure what your budget is, but these are on the smaller side:

Sorry-- this got long-- short version: Did you think your glider was necessary, nice to have, or not needed?

We are finally in our new apartment and really starting to think about furniture, etc. The biggest question that has come up is- is a glider necessary? I realize it's not *actually* necessary, but more like, will it make my life a lot easier in the beginning, or is it just a 'nice to have but you can get by fine without one'?

Back story-- the nursery is somewhat small (about 8'x10'), and right now, we are planning to have our old queen bed in there for when people come to visit in the beginning and the baby is in our room anyway. With the queen in there, we can fit a regular size crib and a dresser/changer, and that's about it. If we did not have the bed in there, we could fit a glider as well, or even if we just had a twin, but we already have the queen from our old apartment. So, if we get a glider, it will have to go in the living room, and ever there, it would be a little crammed in.

Eventually we figure we will get rid of the bed or get a smaller one, but I thought it would be good for guests in the beginning, and might be nice to have someplace to lay down in there when getting LO to sleep, etc.

So moms that have been there, what would you do? Was your glider a life saver in the beginning? Or could you have done just fine without it? Would a bed in the nursery been just as good? We have recliner couches in the living room, but they don't rock or glide.

And, any upholstered gliders that are a little smaller but still really comfortable? I like the PBK Comfort Swivel Glider or the Little Castle Cottage glider, based on sitting on every glider at PBK and Buy Buy Baby. I'm kind of tall (5'7") and it's important I can rest my head back. I didn't think the wooden framed ones were as comfortable. I plan on BFing.

Sorry for the novel!!
