I'm definitely thinking about contacting someone from LLL to help me out. we worked with a lot of great LCs in the NICU but I feel like I forgot everything since we began EPing several weeks ago. I need a refresher for sure!

During her night last night she seemed to want one side for 15 minutes and then had enough and went back to sleep and fought us. but this am I tried the bottle bc usually she takes the most at her morning feed and she loved it. 3oz in 15 min with no problem. I'm glad but just trying to figure out how to make all this work and realizing I need to be very flexible with all of this.

@littleredhairedgrl: I just want to offer my support. I ep'ed for a while and then went back to nursing. I say follow her cues. Being close with her is amazing whether you have a bottle or breast in her mouth. I would take my shirt off so she had complete access to me and have a bottle available. That gave her the option of boob or bottle. Good luck!

A regular standard pillow worked best for nursing. My LO would initially stay on the boob forever. I had to limit her time on the nipple because she cut me pretty bad to the point where I cried everytime my LO latched on. My LC said to limit her to 30 mins max on each breast cuz the rest of the time it's just being used in place of a pacifier.

So awesome that nursing is working for you two! Definitely pump if you still feel full after she feeds. You might need a different nursing pillow, or maybe another pillow underneath it to prop her up higher.

@littleredhairedgrl: have you tried getting in contact with an IBCLC or LLL volunteer? They could probably give you some great advice!

You could probably help your back by making sure you're bringing baby to the breast rather than leaning down to baby, you might also do better with a footrest.

If you're serious about getting LO back to the breast but avoiding oversupply have you thought about gradually switching a pump for a nursing session every couple of days? I'm thinking it might help your breasts adjust to the change in demand :-)

Good luck and you're doing awesome!

Keep at it. It's so hard - the hardest thing I've ever done - but it's so worth it once you get the hang of it. My back also hurt a lot at first, but it got better as I got more confident and more comfortable nursing. If you feel full after she eats, pump. You can offer her a small bottle once in a while (every other day is recommended to ensure she doesn't reject the bottle at some point) and save the rest of what you pump in the freezer. It may come in handy one day. My son was the slowest nurser ever and he would stay on the boob all day if I let him. I usually let him nurse for up to 40 mins at a time, though the recommendation is 20. I say go with you gut and listen to your baby's cues and hang in there! You are doing a GREAT job!!

maybe I spoke too soon :( she just freaked out when I tried to nurse her just now.

I feel like such a failure. I don't know what A wants or how to get her to eat

Nursing lying down is THE BEST! Also, I am pretty tall so I was often hunched over, too. Plus it didn't help that she'd fall in between my body and the pillow either. So I started putting a few receiving blankets under her to lift her up and that helped!

When she was itty bitty we'd nurse for looooong periods sometimes. I just did whatever she wanted - settle in with some Netflix or a good book :) I'd try to start the next feed 2.5 hours after the beginning of her last one, unless she was hungry before then.

Try nursing in a side lying position. I developed back problems nursing hunched over. R usually did 10-15 minutes per side on a 2.5-3 hour schedule during the day with 1-2 nursing sessions overnight.

Since A was born 9 weeks early I was EPing while she was in the NICU and occasionally would try to nurse her, but had to use a nipple shield and she just wasn't strong enough to empty my breast and was being supplemented with expressed milk.

Lately we've been having a lot of trouble with reflux and she is on Zantac and today was doing well but then just decided she didn't want the bottle during the last 2 feeds so I tried nursing and she LOVED IT!! BUT.. first of all, I get almost 40 oz pumping 5/6 times a day so I feel so so full after she nurses and I just feel like I don't know what I'm doing. It seems like she will go forever as if she's on a pacifier so how long do I let her go before I stop her? And do I keep her on the every 2.5 hr schedule or nurse every time she seems like she'd take some?

I also feel like my back hurts so much when I do it. I use a nursing pillow but I am so hunched over watching her and holding her head and making sure she's latched (still using the shield) that I am so so slouched. Help!
