@mrskc: My midwife just emailed me a tip about this. DS just sprouted his first tooth this week and I am terrified of being bit (he chomped down on my nipple really hard when he was only a few days old and while it did not break skin, it definitely hurt!).

She said that when baby bites down to plug his nose. Because babies must breathe through their noses, they will have to let go. Plus, it's an obnoxious feeling without being mean.

I have not tried it yet but it makes sense based on the pushing baby into your boob idea. Good luck!

@mrskc: we have had the same problems with D. It's seems to be the worst until the tooth breaks through. I've had a bad reaction to LO every time she's bit me. I'm still trying to train myself not to react in shock -but it's so hard.

We started having this same problem around that time too. It sounds strange, but what worked for me was to keep my thumb nearby to her mouth when she was nursing and then, when she wanted to, she would grab my thumb and kind of run it over her teeth. Whenever she would try to bite, I would offer her my thumb instead and she would just rub her teeth over it for a second and go back to nursing. Soon enough, she stopped associating nursing w/biting--it really worked for her to have something else she could gnaw on a bit...Every baby is so different--good luck to you!

@mrskc: You're welcome. Let me know if it helps bc I'm just starting to run into this problem with my LO too. It's really hard not to scream and react in a scary way. And the last thing I want is a nursing strike.

@Weagle: Thanks. I will try pushing him into my boob. That's definitely not my first reaction when it happens.

@pregnantbee: Thank you! I will check it out.

There's a webinar about this at Isis Parenting. Look for the one called When Breastfeeding Babies Bite from Dec 2012:

http://www.isisparenting.com/page/webinarsbreastfeeding

Hopefully it helps?

I was always told to push LO's face into my boob when she bit. It worked! She was less likely to bite harder in reaction to my scream. We didn't have much of a problem with biting while nursing, though. Biting any other random time, however...

My son is 6.5 months and has 2 bottom teeth and I think teething again. I suspect we might see another tooth soon. Well, the last few days he has bit me a couple of times while nursing. I notice it is at the end so I think a couple of times it was because he was done. My reaction has been to scream and pull him off. It really startles me.

I'm so nervous when I have to nurse him now. Today he bit me at the beginning of the nursing session. We had just got back from the store and he cried the whole way home, so maybe it was because he was upset? I changed positions and he didn't bite me.

What do I do? I'm flinching and nervous for each nursing session now. I'm scared he's going to bite down even harder and break the skin.
