So I ordered the Munchkin weighted sippy cup mentioned above as well as more Take and Toss cups. I read the Take and Toss cups are a good cup to use to teach how to use a straw because of the suction it creates. I can get LO to sip water from the Take and Toss, but he hasn’t figured out how to suck hard enough in the Munchkin weighted sippy.

We’ve tried feeding formula using faster flow nipples, during a dream feed the past few nights, in the Take and Toss cup and he still refuses formula. He gets a small taste in his mouth and spits it out then refuses to let us put the bottle or sippy back in his mouth. I’ve tried two different formulas thinking he didn’t like the first formula.

What do I do? My husband has tried feeding him multiple times with me in a different room (leaving the house completely isn’t an option at the times he’s tried).

I took care of an 11 month old full time and his mum nursed morning and night and during he night and he had 2-3 6oz formula bottles while in my care, but that quickly decreased to 2 by 12 months and then nothing by 15

I would suggest trying the formula at home for the week before he starts daycare to see how much he eats. At that age my son had 4 bottles to daycare 6oz each. He would usually be having his last bottle right when we arrived to pick him up

Are you around when your husband tries to give him the bottle?

Get out of the house. If he can smell you, he'll want breastmilk (at least for a while)

When DS started daycare, I was still giving him bottled breastmilk at home. I sent formula to daycare. I picked him up one day when he was about to eat, and he refused to take the bottle from me (and got very angry). This kept up for a bit as we increased the formula at home while we weaned off breast milk.

He still eats more formula at daycare than at home (4 7 oz bottles a day). But as we weaned off breastmilk, he stopped refusing it completely.

If he's really hungry, he'll eat it.

If he's eating other food at daycare, he might refuse the milk, but could make up for it once he gets home. Either way, try to pay more attention to the food he gets in a full day or week than what he's getting per meal.

It all depends how much they'll eat at once. We formula fed our daughter and she ate every 3 hours during the day. I think she did 6 ounces every 3 hours.

DD never really took a bottle! She'd drink like 1-2 oz at a time, which was ridiculous! She started day care at 10 months, so a bit older than your LO, and we only brought in bottles for a couple weeks because she wasn't drinking them anyway. I think we ended up with the day care giving her formula, and then regular milk, in a sippy cup, and drinking from a little doll cup or nursing at home.

Also we supplemented with DD1 and found that she took Baby's Only or Hipp (European formula) best since the consistency was closer to breastmilk. I think it wasn't very thick and the smell was less offensive. I think you can get a free sample of Baby's Only online if you want to try before buying.

@Boopers: Munchkin weighted straw cup. With this one, if they don't figure it out on their own you can either blow into the straw so the water/milk comes out and makes them start sucking or if you put a warm liquid in it often naturally comes out the straw at first. Easiest cup for both DD1 and DD2 when learning!

@Boopers: I combo fed my first and he was picky about taste, but took Gerber Soothe very easily. I nursed am/pm only from 7.5-10 months. My second is a bottle refuser but she will take Holle (expensive! I bought some on a local BST group for cheap) and Pure Bliss (can find at target). She mastered the straw cup early (bc we forced her to) - she started with the Zoli bot and the munchkin weighted straw cup. She is now 1 year and I'm just nursing am/pm - she gets formula (and now a combo of formula and whole milk) during the day. She usually drinks about 12-18 oz during the day while I'm gone, depending on how she is doing with solids (she has been slow on solids).

anyway: don't panic, try some "easy" weighted straw cups, and potentially try other formulas?

@Boopers: If they are willing have them start with a 4oz bottle and then make 2oz more if he is hungry at a feeding. This way you aren't wasting formula which even buying generic can get expensive and you can better monitor his eating habits.

@MrsBucky: I’m a teacher and I’ve been off since the beginning of June. He had bottles at daycare before I was off. I’m hoping to continue combo feeding formula during the day and nurse with him when we are together (morning before work and evening after daycare). Currently I’m only trying to give him a bottle of formula one time a day to gradually wean during the day before I go back to work in a few weeks. I can’t get anyone to give him a bottle during the day. I need to cut out the rest of the daytime feedings before I go back to work (2 more feedings), but I’m not sure how I’m going to do that if he won’t take this first feeding. I worry about him not getting any sort of milk during the day and getting dehydrated. I feel like once we start daycare again that he’ll reverse cycle and refuse all formula at daycare, but I’m hoping he doesn’t. 😫

As you can tell, I’m panicking 😂

@Boopers: don’t panic yet! Are you the one trying to give it to him? If so, stop and try to get someone else to give him a bottle of formula. Preferably while you are gone. Babysitter, grandma, partner- 9 months is a hard time to start bottles generally, honestly, especially if he hasn’t had them before. He may be resistant for a while. It’s probably not the formula- it’s probably just that he knows BFig is an option. So, if you’re worried you can try to give him more practice with others before you go back to work, or let him sort it out at daycare, which I get could be anxiety provoking at an already hard time emotionally. Most babies won’t starve themselves, and 9 months is already close to when some babies start the weaning process , so food is another way for him to get what he needs. Once he realizes BFing isn’t an option, he may be more willing to take it especially from daycare staff. Some babies are just more stubborn than others, honestly and that’s not a bad thing- it just makes changes a little tougher. Hang in there!

My sister has tried giving him BM bottles when she babysat a few times and he barely drank anything. My husband tried a bottle with formula mixed with BM and he refused it. He blows raspberries every time he gets the nipple in his mouth.

@Boopers: Will he drink BM from a bottle? DD2 has started refusing bottles (of BM) recently or just drinking 2 oz and refusing the rest. DH got her to drink more by trying a weighted straw cup (she was a little confused by this bc we usually only do water in the cup but she drank 2 more oz) or feeding her while she's sleepy/asleep. I'm not sure if the 'dream feed' tactic will work at daycare, but maybe they can try giving her bottle right before or after a nap and see if the sleepiness helps?

Ok I am panicking. I bought the Kirkland brand formula at Costco because 1. It’s half the price of the other formulas I saw and 2. Because I read good reviews. My LO WILL NOT DRINK IT. I initially thought he was refusing the bottle because I’ve been home full time with him the past month and he hasn’t gotten bottles in that time (other than a few times when he was babysat and he didn’t drink much BM from a bottle then). I’ve mixed it with BM, I’ve given it to him by itself. He refuses to drink it: I even tried mixing it with some baby oatmeal to see if I could at least get the nutrients in him and he refused to eat the oatmeal.

I have no clue what to do you guys. I am only trying for one feeding at this point so that I can gradually wean during the day, but what do I do if he refuses all bottles and formula?!? I don’t want to cut out the next daytime nursing session with him until I can get him to drink formula.

Is there a formula that you guys recommend? I go back to work in 3 weeks and I’m pretty much in a complete and utter panic.

@snarkybiochemist: from what I’ve seen other parents do, we have to send the powder and water separately and then they mix it together per bottle at the time of the feeding.

I don’t remember exactly but when we were combo feeding st that age, the bottles were never more than 5 ounces, sometimes four. I think maybe he got 3 at school and I BF before daycare, when we got home, and before bed, I think. It’s a bit of trial and error. I’d send a little extra at the beginning, see how much is consumed and then moderate from there.

I agree with PP that 7-8oz of formula seems like a lot at this age, and it sounds like condensed feedings (less often, more oz). We started supplementing at that age too. I'd probably estimate two savings of 5-6 oz each while at work, but obvi ask daycare to play it by ear.

When we combo fed E at 6-7 months she got 4oz bottles of either formula or breast milk during the day, at 7.5 months she switched entirely to formula and now gets 6oz bottles. Is your daycare willing to mix bottles or do you have to send them prepared? We are able to send a big tub of formula in and they store it and make bottles as needed. This gives flexibility while you figure out exactly how much he will need.

I did combo feeding and never gave more than 6 oz of formula at one feeding, especially after starting solids. Around 9 months I would say we sent three 6 oz bottles to daycare plus his solids. He rarely finished all the formula (maybe if he was going through a growth spurt).

I would just send what you think he will eat and you can always adjust it up or down once you get into a routine.

We did this with DD1 also at 9 months due to dwindling milk supply. She had been at daycare since 3 months and was drinking 3 4-oz bottles at daycare so we subbed those bottles for the same amount of formula. It worked well. So I would probably send 3 4-oz bottles in the beginning since you're probably not sure how much he drinks during the day and you can always send fewer bottles if he doesn't drink them.

Please talk me through the logistics of nursing and formula feeding. LO2 is 9 months old and is currently EBF. I go back to work in a few weeks and don’t want to deal with the hassle of pumping at work. I’m moving schools and don’t want to figure out the logistics of pumping in a new setting and it’s very stressful leaving my students multiple times a day to pump. Add on to that, continual nipple pain on one side since day 1 and I’m about ready to stop nursing, but not entirely.

My plan is to give formula during the day while he’s at daycare and nurse while we are together until a year and then wean him completely.

I saw a formula chart that says for babies 9-12 months old to give 3 bottles of 7-8 oz of milk a day. Since I plan to combo feed, how much formula should I give instead? We are usually apart 9-10 hours during the day when he’s at daycare. I’d like to nurse him in the mornings around 6 am. Is 3 bottles of formula while he’s at daycare too much? He loves solids and is doing really well with them.

Thank you ladies!
