@Mrs. Goose: I've nursed three babies here and only had one mildly negative experience. I was wearing (not nursing) my youngest and an employee came to tell me where I should nurse. Not even close to a big deal but weird. Like sure, I'll drag my other two children off the playground so I can lock them into a breastfeeding closet when their sister is hungry. She was very young so I think she just didn't know better.

If I have to use one, I like the ones with the wire opening so you can see down without having to hold fabric. My DD never nursed well out either; we'd both just get so hot and she'd fidget and get distracted, etc.

In Cincinnati I get a few rude stares and a few, "good for you"s (all the good for you's are from elderly women, I love it)

Thank you all, so much, for these tips! You all encouraging me to ditch the cover are awesome! I'm going to try to work up the courage to do it! I don't really care at all.. but still worry about offending someone.

And thank you all for telling me about the bebe au lait. I realized I received one of those as a baby shower gift. Its such a lame pattern, though, that I shoved it away in a drawer. I brought it out with me the other night and it does function pretty well. So I'm keeping it in my diaper bag!

@oliviaoblivia: @pastemoo: is Canada more breastfeeding friendly than other places?! Glad I live here! :). If I need to whip my boob out then I will wherever. I did feel awkward on a trip to England because I never saw anyone breastfeeding.

I live in the conservative northeast -- the first time around I used the Hooter Hider. The second time around I used it very sparingly - really only if we were like eating at a table at a restaurant. Boobs were out in public and the rest of the world can shove it!

@oliviaoblivia: LOL. I love this.
I am also anti cover, but more because of the heat. I endured the cover for a couple months with my son, gave up right around 9 weeks, on a trip to Canada, and no one there gave 2 sh*ts, so it made me more comfortable.

I agree with PPs. The two shirt method is the best when nursing. Covers are huge and annoying in my opinion. Plus later on they will frustrate the babe.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: that's interesting that they always look away. Lately I find if I notice someone noticing me bf-ing, they will often smile in a "that's so sweet" kind of way. I even had another mom come up to me at the zoo once and thank me for breastfeeding in public.

I was out with my mom the one time I tried to use my cover with my first newborn. I got frustrated, yanked it off and nursed peacefully. My mom was horrified and told my husband all about "what I did" when we got home. I laughed and have since converted myself and my mom into an "it's ok to whip it out any time, any place, baby's gotta eat" approach.

I was always a fan of the cover because it helped LO not get distracted when nursing in public for the first few months. I used an Udder Cover, (awful name, good product) which had a rigid top so I could look down on LO. The opening at the top also helped with ventilation so we didn't get too hot underneath. I would definitely recommend it!

My kids get too hot under cover so I just gave up. Sometimes I'd do the Swaddle blanket tucked into the bra while baby latched but usually I use the tank top/shirt deal where tank goes down and shirt goes up.

Ditch the cover. If you're at all worried about it, find a more secluded spot to nurse in (e.g., Nordstrom lounge if you're at the mall, bench facing away from most people walking by, etc). But, honestly, people only get an eyeful if they are hardcore staring and specifically looking for it in the 10s that baby is trying to latch. And that's their problem, not yours!

In the early days when I needed both hands to nurse I would ask the person who was with me to hold the cover out away from my body a bit while I got DD positioned. I use Bebe Au Lait so the neck is stiff and sits away enough that I can look down and see DD.

Have never used a nursing cover but have never just pulled out a boob. I do own of 2 things:

1. Wear a nursing tank or nursing bra + stretching tank and a long loose top over it. Unclip and pull done bra/tank. Bob is loose under top. I position baby and lift loose top. Loose top covers top of breast and falls down to cover nipple if baby suddenly unlatches

2. Wear nursing bra and a top with a stretchy neckline. Unclip bra, drap burp cloth over shoulder and boo. Under burp cloth, stretch out neckline to pull out boob (boob is outside of shirt but loose and covered by burp cloth). Position/latch baby and have burp cloth draped over top of breast. If baby suddenly unlatches you can easily pull down burp cloth to cover nipple

I never used a cover. But I am maybe more comfortable than others nursing in public. In the early days I found the boob shirts to be really helpful. Or I would wear a nursing tank with a shirt over it. After a while the baby would cover my belly and I skipped the nursing tank, also it was summer.

I don't use a cover it's annoying and if you're comfortable not using one go for it. If anything, I will tuck a Muslin blanket into my bra strap and kind of drape it over my chest since I usually wear vneck shirts and pull it down. I literally sat at lunch across from my husbands aunt the other day and nursed and she commented at the end of lunch she was surprised how good the baby was and didn't need to eat or anything the whole time we were there! Haha.

I never used a nursing cover, but when feasible I would drape a swaddling blanket to hide a little boob. The baby nursed better when I was able to make eye contact with him. In public, I typically picked places to sit that did not have direct oncoming traffic. In general, when I caught someone make the connection I was nursing the baby they would just look the other way and keep walking.

I fail at nursing covers. It's easier to do the 2 layers of shirt trick. I decided I also pretty much don't care. I'll try to find a secluded spot if possible and if not, I'll turn my back just to latch and then baby's head covers mostly everything anyway.
