I was pregnant and nursing during the 1st tri. My OB said nursing and pre-term labor concerns aren't even a *potential* issue til around the 3rd tri. My understanding is that the amounts of hormone you secrete while nursing are not enough to cause preterm labor or a miscarriage while in the 1st tri. I did end up miscarrying, and was assured, however, that it was NOT due to nursing. If we were to have another BFP, I still wouldn't wean solely for that reason.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to discuss it more with my OB at the 9 week appointment. In the mean time, I'm sharing all the research I can with my DH who is now alarmed.

@Sunshine710: My OB said nursing was fine. I nursed my DD through my entire pregnancy.
Good luck! Just make sure you take your vitamins, drink lots of water and eat well!

Eta: I would only stop if you had a medical condition, you felt ready, or your ob had a good reason for telling you to wean.

I heard stuff all over the board when I was pregnant and nursing, the drs def were not in agreement with each other. Personally I found I started to feel uncomfortable as pregnancy progressed and did feel contractions, though I don't think they are any different than BH. My LO had just turned 2 though so she was a bit older and I was ready to stop. I'd see how your body responds and play it by ear.

I did hear that from my OB but my supply dried out shortly after my BFP. He wanted me to concentrate on my GD instead of nursing.

I've heard someone get that advice IRL but have also read that you can absolutely continue through pregnancy with no ill effects on the pregnancy!

I nursed my oldest until he self weaned when I was 7 months pregnant. I was never told to wean. My midwives were very happy I was still breastfeeding and told me to keep going as lo.g as we wanted.

Hmmm...that's interesting because I am also 5 weeks and still nursing my 13.5 month old. I mentioned it to the OB's office and they didn't say anything. My first appointment isn't until 10w so I will ask then I guess. I know there are a few Bee's that continued to nurse while pregnant so hopefully they will chime in.

I'm 5 weeks pregnant and still nursing my 14.5 month old. My sister in law over the weekend seemed very concerned that I would be nursing through pregnancy and suggested I call the doctor. So I did this morning and they recommended that I wean by 16 weeks as nursing can cause pre-term labor or miscarriage. I did quite a bit of research on my own and did not have any intent of stopping soon. I am so frustrated, did anyone else receive this same advice from their doctor?
