none of my grandparents lived to old old age (past 75 i think). my grandpa was the oldest and she was set to go golfing with her friends in their retirement community that morning and didn't show up. she had passed in her home.

DH's grandma was 96 and doing well until the couple days before she went into the hospital and passed a few days later.

My maternal grandparents moved into a CRC when my grandmother first started having issues with Alzheimers. They lived in the Independent Living, and then she had a stroke and an MI, and was transferred to the nursing unit. She died on the nursing unit, but my grandfather lived for another 8-10 years, first in the Independent Living (till he was 97!) and then they moved him to the Assisted Living after a fall broke his hip/shoulder. He died in his apartment in the Assisted Living. My paternal grandfather died before I was born. My paternal grandmother died in a long-term acute care hospital, where she had been on a ventilator from emphysema.

I hope someday (like when the kids are out of daycare) Hubs and I can purchase a long-term care insurance plan, which helps pay for in-home services. Because traditional health insurance does not pay for them (other than skilled services following a hospitalization)!

My grandpa lived at home until he died of cancer.

My grandma lived in a memory care unit of an assisted living center as she had Alzheimer's.

My other grandma lived in a rehab unit dealing with post-stroke issues.

I had three grandparents live well into their 90's. One grandmother lived on her own until she 92(stopped driving at 90), then moved to an assisted living facility followed by a nursing home, where she passed away after a stroke, she was 97 when she died. My other grandmother lived on her own, with her husband until she was 90 and then moved to a nursing facility/assisted living for dementia. She lived there for several years before she passed away. My grandfather lived on his own until he was 92, moved to a nursing home after a stroke and passed away there as well.

I had one grandparent who was in a nursing home. He had dementia and cancer.

My great-grandma died in a rehab center, ironically the night before she was due home. She was there from a stroke.

My other grandparents either passed at home or are still alive.

This topic has been on my mind as my parents have been getting older.

My parents' mothers actually lived to a fairly old age!

* My dad's mom eventually went into a nursing home, but it was close to where we lived and we visited her all the time.
* My mom's mom is still alive, but is struggling with dementia and is living with my mom's family in Japan.

But my parents' fathers all passed away before they got too old, and so they died in their homes. I guess it's not uncommon for men to die before their wives...

Where did your grandparents live as they got older?
