LO hated the cover so after the first few times I stopped using it. He would get super hot and sweat in it. Depending on the clothing it is easy to nurse discreetly like @Mrs. Bee: said. I also found wearing a nursing bra and a regular top that you could just pull the neckline down or hem up was much easier than a nursing top with all those layers.

Were you actually nursing in the Ergo or was that just what he was in prior to nursing? If you were nursing in the Ergo that is super easy to do! Just drop the waist line some so LO is at your breast level and use the sleep hood as your nursing cover. Paxbaby also does a trick using a SSC where she puts her LO in the carrier like in a sling with legs to one side. I never tried this way but I nursed in the Ergo often (or RS, Moby, etc) and even more often without.

I never, ever got used to nursing in public. My babies were big and fat, and my boobs hang low. Without a Boppy it's a 2 person job. One hand to hold the baby's body in place, one hand to hold the baby's head in place, one hand to hold the boob in place in front of the baby's mouth, and one hand to hold the nursing cover in place while the squirming baby is kicking and punching it away.

i think olive always hated the cover. it's pretty easy to nurse discreetly without a cover over their head if you're wearing the right clothes. and instead of using a cover, i would just kinda hold up an aden & anais blanket behind her head. it was much smoother without a cover.

The last time I nursed in public, she turned her head away and milk squirted everywhere - I think it might have shot across the cafe actually, ha ha. A used to nurse in public very well but not so much these days. I favour the sitting up position when we're out and aout though ,sitting in the Ergo works well.

In the beginning it was easier for us the hardest part was getting comfortable. I would try out my outfits before I left the house to make sure they were "easy access"
As he got bigger he wanted nothing to do with the cover and just wanted to see everything. Thank goodness for nursing rooms at the mall. I'm not totally modest but he would kick and pull, haha I did have better luck with throwing him under a big sweater when he was bigger and into taking my shirt off.

@Bao: thanks for the encouragement! i will try to persevere!

@runsyellowlites: yeah, maybe i'll save the 15 layers of clothing for when we get better at it--i'll try a simpler wardrobe next time!

@oliviaoblivia: i totally should have done the cardigan and tank. and that's a great idea about using a position to reduce stimulation--thank you!

We've done it a few times. She won't nurse with a cover despite my efforts. I've found that stretchy tanks and wrap cardigan work really well. I nurse her in a sitting position with her legs straddling my thigh and semi wrapped in my sweater. Anytime I've tried a cradle hold in public has been a disaster, I think the seated position cuts down on distraction.

@edelweiss: My first NIP experience did go easily BUT P was also 4 months old already and we had worked through the majority of our feeding issues. Before that, nursing her anywhere was a mess!

Still, I'm not very good at the over shirt up & undershirt/nursing shirt down maneuver so I prefer to just wear a stretchy tank that I can easily pull down. The way I see it I see women showing more cleavage when they go out for their pre-party dinner on Friday night so anyone with an issue of mine can back off! lol

I'm sure after a few tries you and the little guy will get the hang of it!

I know that my LO does get distracted even it home. If there is a lot going on, she does not nurse well. My first time wasn't too bad, but since in the beginning I always used something to rest my arm on while nursing, and I didn't have that in public, it was a little hard to manage. It will get better though, it takes some practice...don't give up yet!

i tried nursing my 7-week old in public for the first time today and it was not characterized by the words "great", "fine", "smooth sailing" or anything remotely resembling those words.

first there was the draping of the cover, undoing the bra, moving the nursing pad, separating the layers of my nursing top, finding the boob hole, etc...i can deal with those maneuvers and know they need practice, but i get all that taken care of, and my little guy won't latch on for more than a few seconds at a time. he's all squiggly and moving around and not focused on the boob. i think he nursed for maybe 3 minutes out of 10 minutes of struggling.

i thought perhaps the new environment was too stimulating for him, as was the fact that we were out and about--he was in the ergo facing inwards, but still...did anyone else have a similar experience when they first nursed in public? how long did it take for you to get the hang of nursing in public?
