Wow, what a jerk! I'm so sorry that happened and hope it doesn't discourage you from nursing in public again!

It's funny, I'm pretty shy and felt uncomfortable nursing in public at first (and I used a cover) but the more stories I heard of people getting rude comments the more comfortable I got nursing without a cover just to prove a point.

I would have told him to back up and to stop harassing me. If he didn't, I'd have found security and complained. I'd also have told him that my right to breastfeed in public is legally protected (hopefully it is in your state).

What a jerk that guy was. Is he going to hide to enjoy his meal? I have nursed in public some, & usually notice more an obvious avoidance of eye contact than anything else. I feel like I should do more public nursing just to help the "cause". Lol! Often I'll nurse LO in the back seat of the car before putting her into a carrier, so that's only semi public, but is efficient for me when we are on the go.

I have never received any negative comments when I breastfeed in public and they would certainly hear a "go F yourself" if I did. Good for you for standing up for yourself. Those people are just bullies and need to be put in their place.

Side note: if traditional nursing covers get too hot, have you tried using a muslin blanket like A&A? I've never used a traditional nursing cover - just my A&A tried around my neck and draped over the baby/boob. That way they can still breathe and get light also.

@SeptMomma12: no I delivered at Hackensack. I haven't heard of that group but my lactation consultant recommended a la leche group that meets once a month in Ridgewood so I think I'll try that in December.

@Mrs. Microscope: lol I had to get out! my MIL is here to help with A so I had some time to run errands and get out with just J. next week when it's just me and A and J will likely be a different story :silly:

I've nursed in public without a cover for 2.5 years. No negative comments, some disapproving looks, a few positive comments in total. Idaho is the only state that hasn't explicitly made it legal to nurse in public/private, btw. I'm sorry you had that experience and am glad you stood up for yourself.

@littleredhairedgrl: I have been nursing uncovered in public for over 2.5 years and I have never had a comment like that. Lots of encouraging comments from other moms. The only time I have ever had stares is in certain cities in the States, because I didn't realize it wasn't a thing to pubically breastfeed everywhere. But even then, nobody said anything.

Wow! Go you! I can't believe you were able to do that at 3 weeks old! When my LO was three weeks we were still barely able to handle nursing at home and had to do it in the one spot on the couch totally surrounded by like every single pillow in the house.

That guy was horrible! im so sorry you had that experience.

I'm so sorry! That's completely inappropriate, especially since both Target AND Starbucks are super pro-breastfeeding in their stores. I don't even understand the logic, really, what's the difference between being normally clothed and using a cover...you are covered both ways! Anyway, keep doing what you are doing!

OMG! What an asshole! I cannot believe the nerve of some people! I nursed for 26 months between my two girls, mostly without a cover, and never had any negative comments! The only comment I ever received was from a group of midwives who were at the next table from us in a very crowded cafe. I was nursing DD1 without a cover, she was about a year old at the time, and the midwives gave me a thumbs up, and then stopped at our table on their way out to explain that they were midwives and they were so pleased to see someone still nursing their child at this age and in public without feeling the need to hide away. I was so surprised I didn't really know what to say, but it was nice nonetheless. That was in Australia. I'm in England now, pregnant with my third, but I'm not expecting any negative comments as it's pretty widely accepted here.

That's so rude! I was much more shy about nursing in public with my first. But with the second one I would whip it out if baby needed to eat.

omg! I've never gotten a comment, thankfully. Only once, when DD1 was a little baby, I was nursing in the back seat of my tinted-window SUV and a young woman and her friend literally peered through the window with disgusted looks on their faces. Um...you are violating my privacy, I am in my own vehicle! I was so shocked to even do anything.
