Around a year, we were nursing five times a day. By 18 months we were down to two. And now at 22 months it's just right before bed. I don't think my supply dipped too drastically until I got pregnant when my daughter was 19 or so months. But that still hasn't stopped her.

@Mama Bird: I did the same. I am a crappy pumper and the job I had when I was still working was very intense so I didn't have many opportunities to pump (and especially not for 45 minutes at a time!). I gave DD formula for daycare and nursed her before/after work from 7 months- 12 months. I then switched to WCM for daycare and nursed at home until I quit my job when she was 14 months. I continued night nursing until she was 20 months. I stopped offering one day and she never requested it again.

I stopped pumping around 10 mo and continued to nurse morning and night, with a few sporadic daytime feedings (not every day), until 13 or 14 mo, and then dropped the morning session and random daytime sessions, and continued with the bedtime session only until about 15 mo, when I was ready to stop. I was amazed that LO did not ever mention or ask for it again after that last session - she was so ready to be done and I had no idea! Supply was never an issue. But it may be relevant that I generally had oversupply issues during my BF journey.

We did this and it worked well. I weaned the morning session at 18 months (by choice, because I was starting to resent always being the one to wake up early with her) and the evening session at 28 months (because I just felt it was time).

I'm glad to see it works out for most people. I'm sure it will help that she still nurses during the night... although I'd be happy if that stopped some time soon

From probably 18 months to 3 years we nursed morning and night. I weaned her at age 3 by choice.

At around 13 months, I started working with my daughter to stop nursing during the day. We started moving towards nursing at nap, bedtime, wake ups at night, and morning. By 15 months, we were down to bedtime and either middle of the night or morning. She's 17 months now, and we still do those two nursing sessions. I don't have a ton of milk anymore, but she gets a bit of milk and a lot of comfort still. I am 11 weeks pregnant, so I'm not sure what will happen with my supply or if she will self wean. But we'll happily continue nursing while it works for us both.

My good friend did it for well over a year, it just worked out really well for her and her son so she kept it up just in the morning and night. I'd estimate she stopped pumping around 1 but kept morning and night nursing until about 2.5.

I tried to make this happen with both but didn't have much success.

LO 1 my supply was really tanking, and were were supplementing with formula. I went down to pumping 1x a day to no pumping within 2 weeks, then tried to keep the morning/evening nursing going, but I supposed a combo of very little supply left and LO getting older be basically just stopped.

LO 2 my supply was definitely better, I made it longer. At 12 months I stopped pumping, and tried for just morning and evening. This lasted for about a month. He was too busy in the morning to nurse anymore, and I think at night there was just barely anything left, so it ended. ;(

I had a similar experience to @mamabird with my DD. I pumped until 16 months, then did just morning/night for a few months, then just night and finally stopped completely at 22 months mostly because we were TTC and I was kind of done. It was no big deal. I never did much night nursing--DD started STTN at 8 weeks so it was only when she was sick/teething (very rarely and only until about a year, after a year I made DH deal with MOTN wake ups which were super super rare). No supply issues despite no night nursing.

So it's obviously not quite the same but I work three days a week (no pumping) and still have pretty good supply although I do still nurse once during the day when I'm not working. Night nursing is a good way to maintain supply though

I pumped until 14 months and have been nursing just morning and night for the past month (and sometimes overnight). I had a big oversupply and have noticed a significant decrease since dropping the pump, but I have plenty for 2-3 sessions/day. He knows we don't nurse unless it's in his rocking chair in his room and doesn't ask otherwise. I would like to keep nursing until 2ish or until he self-weans.

Yeah, worked for me. I dumped the pump at 12 months and nursed morning and night, and then just at night, for another three months. It made for very easy weaning to just have to drop one last session.

I pumped until 16 months, and the gradually have cut back sessions when we're together. Now at almost 2 we're down to bedtime and sometimes she asks in the am and afternoon after work. No problems with supply, though obs there is less available if she does and extra session. She doesn't seem to mind much.

I finally purposefully night weaned a couple weeks ago when I realized she was never fully going to do it on her own. I think maybe the nighttime nursing does help keep up your supply too.

I have a crazy job and pumping would have been basically impossible, so starting around 8 weeks old we gradually switched from nursing to formula during the day. We nursed morning and night/overnight only from 3 months old until she self weaned around 13 months. I never had any issues, and say go for it! I think the key is to make the transition gradual - I used a full two months to cut out one daytime feeding each week, while making sure that she nursed regularly at night. There were a few times that I was away overnight that I still pumped, just to keep my body in the rhythm of providing milk at night an morning. Good luck!

A is about to turn one and I'm ready to throw my pump in the fireplace. I'm not ready to completely end our nursing relationship though and would like to keep nursing her morning and night (and probably overnight since she still wakes up a ton). I tried this with my son, but was only able to nurse before bed due to my schedule and I think my supply tanked pretty quickly. We were done nursing completely by 14/15 months.

Has anyone been able to keep nursing for an extended period of time without pumping during the day? Did you eventually wean because of low/no supply, or on your/baby's own terms?
